Fort De Soto park in St. Pete

Thinking of spending some time in this park in late March. Looks like a nice place with lots to do. How busy is this park at this time? Is it difficult to get a site? If they are booked up, are there other RV parks in the area to choose from?

Thanks to all who share their knwoledge.
  • They have a lot of sites, but most are NOT on the water shore. Water sites go first with other, less desirable ones later. You can make reservations in advance on line.
  • The park's campsite map gives a pretty good idea of the sites with the best views. Note the mangroves, which are marked on the map, they do block the view a bit from some sites. It's a great park, although one of the best features, the North Beach, is a short drive, not a walk. Bring lots of quarters for the tolls if you're going back forth to Tampa/St. Pete.
  • It is a popular place to stay and a lot of local Pinellas county residents (who get an advance opportunity to book) come on weekends especially. So it's easier to get midweek sites, but it may be tough for March at this point.

Read the website, though - they hold back some sites and release them once a week for online booking. Also be aware which section you can book if you have dogs.

    Enjoy - it's a great park.

It will be very crowded/busy in March as everything in Fl is due to spring break. If you don't have a reservation, you may be able to snatch up a cancellation. I just checked the website and on the random dates I chose in March, there were no sites available.
  • I personally looked through March, April, May, and June of 2017... and I couldn't find anything available...this was in December 2016...just stopped looking because I have other plans after that. I lived in St. Petersburg for a year while I looked for a home to buy in Florida. Have had the new house 1 year and 6 months. (Gives you a time frame that this wasn't 20 years ago..lol) I also have traveled a great deal of Florida, and absolutely love Ft. Desoto... One of my absolute favorite beaches is "pass-a-grill". The Brass Monkey offers free wifi... and it even reaches to the beach in front of the restaurant for a good distance. The WiFi code password is 1973... been the same password for almost 3 years now. There is also a small beach shack in front of the brass monkey right on the beach. That in my opinion has some of the best burgers ive ever had. And free drinks refills for locals. It's not advertised, but all you have to do is ask and hand them your cup. Important to keep your cup, and free refills all day long.... Pass a grill is literally right beside ft. Desoto... I take the boat between them... but it's only a 5 mins drive...
  • P.S.... Pass a grill... take lots of quarters for tolls and or parking... what they consider the fishing side only takes quarters. And the beach side takes quarters and credit cards and or debit cards. Imy not one who likes to use my card alot but I've never had a billing problem on my card at pass a grill with parking or any of the many restaurants. Also if you stay to late at the beach, as I have on many occasions. There is no person at the toll booth... so bring quarters..
