Getting an American Visa Credit Card

Hi this will be our 2nd year being snowbirds from Alberta. We currently have an RBC Georgia American Visa and bank account. Not happy with it as they are not able to send statements electronically.

Another problem we keep running into occasionally is that they want a US zip code (I know about adding the 2 zero's at end but this doesn't always work).

What we are looking for is a bank and visa that will allow us to attach a US address to the account and send us our statements electronically.

Any leads that could save a bunch of time and effort would be much appreciated.

  • We have had Wells Fargo account for almost 25 years. Have both a debit and credit card. We have a US address and everything works great. Another workaround for the gas pumps is to have one Canadian credit card with a US address. Maybe the CG where you will be staying will allow you to use that address. Sign up for on line statements and you are good to go. When you head back to Canada have the address changed to your Canadian address. Of course you will be hit with the 2 to 3% currency charge on every US purchase.

  • Thanks everyone for some great info. Looks like in order to do what we want we have to go with the Debit/Visa card.

Want this cause we have ran into a few issues with no US Visa and zip code.
  • Lots of folks (Canadians) in the Yuma area use Wells Fargo. They have a Debit/Visa Check card. Don't know about the electronic statements. We use 1stBank Yuma and they prefer e-statements. i believe they are affiliated with Wells Fargo but someone else may be better informed as to their affiliations.
  • We use BMO Harris here in the States. They are a Canadian bank. Don't know if this might help?
  • I use a RBC US account in Canada and then I have the same Visa card you have. I don't get any paper statements as I watch the account along with all my other accounts on line. The card has worked well for us and we seldom get asked for a Zip code except at Fuel stops. Then I pull out the Pilot/Flying J card. Macktee
  • I have the same RBC account. When my Canadian statement comes electronically I click on US banking and check the account. :? I use the park where I winter as my US address. Before I used my cousin's address in the Wa.
    No biggy. :h
  • Have a US $ Visa from TD in Canada. Automatic payment on statement due date from my TD Canadian acct. Works perfectly. TD gave me a zip to use when asked. The zip is the banks transfer zip (not sure what that means but it works). The TD US$ Visa has my home Canadian address with postal code and have used it problem free in the US for 8 winters.
  • What works for us is we have the same RBC US account that you mention. This allows us to transfer funds from our Canadian account to the US account. We have a debit card for that account and of course can write checks. We then also have a Chase account. We can transfer funds directly from the RBC US account to the Chase account electornically (takes a couple of business days). We then have a Visa debit card for the Chase account and also checks.

Because we have a park model, we have a US address so can use that ZIP code when we need to get gas. If you are in a RV with no address, perhaps you could use a mail forwarding service and register your Chase account using that address and ZIP. Alternatively, Chase has a feature where you can enter a temporary address for the account on line. You could just change the temporary address whenever you move. If you opt for electronic statements, they won't send mail so you might not even need to change it after the first entry.

If you are looking for a true credit card in the US, I think you might have a problem getting one as you will not have a credit history/score. Someone else might have more information if they have been able to get one. Chase are great to work with so you could also ask them directly.
  • Not sure about when you live in Canada. You can use a billing address different than your home address with visa. If you order on line you have to make sure the vendor has the billing address. Plus the home address depending on where you want it shipped.
  • Hi,

TDbank has USA branches and I believe they do online banking. One can even send money both ways between the USA and the Canada. Minimum balance for a "no fee" account was $260.00 USD.
