Hilton Head Harbor and Hilton Head to do's

Hello,

My wife and I are considering going to Hilton Head island this summer. It appears that Hilton Head Harbor is the only place for us to stay since the other campground is a motorhome only resort.

We will probably stay in an interior site and was wondering if anyone could make a recommendation on the best section to stay WITH PETS.

Also since we have never been there before are there any recommendations on things to do? We are around 60 years old so nothing like skydiving or bungee jumping which I would have done prior to bypass surgery LOL

Also what restaurants are must do's? We love seafood, American, Italian and Chinese.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Dave

What is the Harbor area and what does it have to offer? I don't have a dually but based on the other response I may be rethinking going here sounds very expensive. I never like spending money just to spend more on an attraction etc.

The "harbor" area is actually the Sea Pines side of the island. It costs $5 for non owners to enter, the $25 is for trucks with dual rear tires. It is intended for delivery trucks, but duallys fall into it. This area has the big harbor, Sea Pines Plantation/Harbor Town, shopping, light house, Salty Dog cafe and more.

We have been to Hilton Head a few times and going back in Oct. as we like it. We stay at Hilton Head Harbor RV Resort and Marina and it is nice. When you get there, you will get a golf cart to drive around and then pick out your own site. The park is dog friendly so you don't have to worry about a specific area.

We go to Caligny Plaza and hit the shops, stroll the beach and then eat at Skillets Cafe. They are dog friendly and have a menu for your dog with dishes made for them by a vet. We also go to Shelter Cove and look at the boats and visit the shops there. Alot of good resturants on the island, even have one at the campground, just choose your liking. The whole island is just about covered with biking trails and there are rentals if you don't have your own.

We think it is a nice place to go unwind, chill. If you go in busy season, I could see traffic being an issue.
  • HIlton Head is a bit of an upscale adult oriented place. Golfing, tennis, lot of paved bike trails, decent beach. Nice Restaurants. Not really kid friendly. I don't consider it expensive but on the other hand it's not the most economical place to go. It's often referred to as the San Diego of the east.
HIlton head is divided into plantations(communities). Some of these are gated with private entrances that may or may not be open to the public. Some charge fees for entry. The plantations are like quasi little towns with their own set of rules, amenities and services. The harbor area is in the Sea Pines Plantation. It is a very popular area with a touristy harbour area , lot of bike paths , PGA golf course, beach etc. There is an entry fee /toll to this area. Which was $5.00 the last time I went in my dually 5 years ago.
Hilton Head is a unique place with decent weather year round.
If you are a frugal, flea market, all you can eat buffet kind of guy who would rather count their savings vs. spend a little more for the better item it may not be for you.
I enjoy flea markets and buffets, but I also enjoy the upscale nature of Hilton Head area as well.

Stayed at the RV reort just over the bridge.
The fee to go to the harbor is much higher in a dual wheel tow rig.
They said it was a commercial vehicle.
We didn't stay long. Just a little too uppity for our taste.
  • Its a very nice RV park. If you don't fish or golf then all that is left to do is relax or go shopping. The traffic is horrendous in the high season. Be prepared for that. Lots of great restaurants on the island. There is Harbor town to go to but it cost you 5 dollars (at least it WAS 5 dollars a few years ago) to get into Sea Pines. Nice beaches to lounge around on and beach bars to belly up to.

Savannah GA is 45 minutes away and if you have never been there its worth the road trip, a lot of history and architecture, and there is historic Bluffton that is closer than Savannah. Not a whole lot to do if you are not a golfer really. If you are then you have died and gone to heaven if you can afford the greens fees.

When you get there the check in people will take you around the park in a golf cart for you to pick out your site. That is because the sites are privately owned and the park people have to be impartial so they make you pick out your site, they will not assign one to you. I don't believe the pet issue is a problem, just ask them when you check in.
