Input on Doc's RV Park & Rock Crusher Canyon RV Park

We are newly retired and planning to winter south for the 2016/17 season. I'm having trouble deciding on a sight unseen spot but these two have made the short list. Doc's is in Gulf Shore, AL. Rock Crusher is in Crystal River, FL. We would probably spend 3-4 months there. Would/have either of these worked for anyone here?
  • Been to Rock Crusher Canyon many times and use to live in that area for years. It is a very large(acreage) RV park with good shade. The amenities are there and the staff was friendly. It was just bought out by Sun RV Resorts a couple months ago and I imagine there will be some changes coming down the pike, knowing how Sun operates their properties.

That area of Florida is awesome and there is lots to see and do. You're within an hour to an hour and half of most of the amusement parks in Florida. It does get down into the 20's a couple times a winter, but it is back in the nice range within a few hours, so weather would not be a factor. It would be a good place to winter and give you a starting point to see what else is available, if you don't care for the park. Personally, I think it is one of the better parks in central Florida, for the money.
  • I totally agree with Bob above. I have a home only a 30 minute drive from Rock Crusher RV Park. My sis in law lives across the street from there. I is a nicely shaded park with all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. Close to everything you would require. The weather in winter months is good, some colder days but warms back up quickly!
  • Never been to Doc's but more to do and sites will be closer. Have been to Rock Crusher and sites are big with good shade.

I also just bought a home near there. The Springs in this area are spectacular. As are all the pines trees. Something you don't see further south.

Regarding the cold? Makes me laugh being from up North. When the 'Florida' weather guy predicts it is going to get 'real' cold for the night it's a whole different story.

The first time I experienced a cold night predicted I battened down the hatches before sundown on the MH insulating it and getting ready for the cold night.

Well....cold temps in Florida means that it gets cold for one whole hour, right before dawn. :S
  • Also consider Bay Breeze in Gulf Shores. http://www.baybreezerv.com

Gulf Shores will be significantly chillier than Crystal River.
  • Walked through Docs when we stayed down the street. Doc's looked good but Dec & Jan would be cool.
  • We've stayed at Rock Crusher for portions of the past 3 winters and this year we've reserved for 3 months. We also have some friends that stay in condos in Gulf Shores. I'd take the weather in Crystal River over Gulf Shores anytime. Too cool in GS for me.

Rock Crusher has a nice atmosphere. Plenty of trees/scrubs between and around the individual sites. This gives you good privacy without making you isolated. There's a friendly bunch of campers there, especially if you take part in activities. I like to play horseshoes and golf and there are groups for both. You will have to ask someone about the golf because it's not on the activities calendar, but rather run by campers themselves. There are groups that like to bicycle, kayak, and ride their motorcycles. There are crafts for those that like them and if you just want to be private you can do it without people trying to drag you into something you're not into. Good places to eat around the area too.
