Last minute trip near Charlotte, NC

Just found out we have the weekend free, but don't know where to go! We just moved to Charlotte from OH, so we haven't camped around here anywhere. It looks like the weather will be decent and we can camp Fri through Monday. We have two little ones, 6 and 2. Where should we go? We'd like full hook up, but we can do just electric if need be. We don't like camping on top of our neighbor, so a place with decent size spots would be nice. I'm just ready to get outside! Any suggestions???

  • Thank you all so much for the suggestions and ideas! You see my problem...TOO many options!! :-) For our first trip out for the season, I'm hoping to stay a little closer to home, more like 2 ish hours. So that narrows it down a little! We won't be able to head out until Friday afternoon, so we'd rather not have to set up camp after dark. Also hoping we can find a place that's not crazy crowded since its spring break time. I'm excited to head to the beach and to the mountains this summer! Charlotte really is a great place to live if you love camping!!! Thanks again! Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated as well!

And it would be worth the trip, too. :B

Check out Tom Johnsons in Marion as your base camp, and then take your car and do a trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The poster that said you could get to the beach and the mountains in the same day is nuts, unless you are using a jet plain, or unless they plan on making a U turn after they get a cup of coffee at the beach !

It is about a six-hour drive from Mt. Mitchell, the tallest mountain east of the Rockies, to Wilmington, a port city.

    4fromOH,
Consider Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet, SC, which is just south of Myrtle Beach. It is about a four-hour drive from Charlotte. You may not be able to get full hook-up site this close to your arrival, but i'm sure you can get a water and electric (30 amp) site. (They have a very good dump site, with multiple dump stations.)

  • By the way...... Britt's is open on the weekends till Memorial Day.

You really don't believe I can eat breakfast in Blowing Rock in the morning, and have Britt Donuts at Carolina Beach before supper??? I promise you I can, and do it easily. It's only 5 1/2 driving hours or less from Blowing Rock to Carolina Beach.
    You need to go more.

I believe his point was that if you started at one side of the state and traveled to the other , you would be able to see all the different terrains... Beach.. True mountains,..cities... Not a lot of states can boast that claim...

Terry , you are so right,, Charlotte is a great spot to be located in when it somes to departing for vacation!. We now have a facility in Charlotte and I already have my chunks of vacation carved out around business trips to the area ! I too would go south and East.. Charleston maybe?Savannah? they are a bit farther but doable in a 4-5 day trip..Joe

It's true. You can be to Charleston in abut the same time it takes to get to MB.
NC is a state where you can see the mountains and beach in one day. With lots inbetween, AND on the same highway

Wow, You leave it wide open. You are 3 1/2 hours from Myrtle Beach. Great campgrounds there with indoor pools, and all you need to have a great time. You are 2 hours from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Lots of CGs up there as well. You are also less than an hour from Kings Mountain State Park. No sewer hookups, but a great campground. You are in a variety vacation land. What do you want to do? and we will help find a CG.

This time of year. I do suggest you head South, and East. It's still cold in the high country. The beach should be good.
