Madeline Island Wisc CG and ferry

Thinking about going to Madeline Island Wisc next year. There are not a lot of electric sites in the CG so I am looking at making reservations soon.
TT including hitch and bumper is 34ft. Without making the call yet, I assume that the ferry to the island can handle a TT that size since they say they handle semi's.
Does anyone know if the CG can handle TTs that size? And exactly how nice is the area? Is it worth a 9 hr drive?
Thanks

  • As others have said, don't try to camp there. My wife has a summer house there so I know the situation.
  • I would camp in the Washburn City park on Lake Superior & take a day trip to the island.
  • It's been a number of years but we made the trip over on the ferry and then left the next day. At that time the only way to fill the water tank was from a hand pump at the water plant. The flys were so thick that you couldn't be outside. In fact, just getting to the ferry they totally covered the front of the trailer in fly goo. Never did get all the stains off. You could see them swarming up from the highway as you drove. Never seen anything like it. For some reason there was a couple of hours in the morning where they weren't too bad and there was a wonderful trail along the shore.

It's been many years since I was last in that area, but some things are likely not to change....Flies. And Mosquitos. They were about as fierce as it gets there on the island. The island itself is very nice. It's flat, and easy to get around. And yes, the ferry (at least back in the day) could handle large rigs -- we saw several motorhomes there, along with large trailers.

There's some alternatives if you so desire. There are campgrounds in the Bayfield and Washburn area.
  • You might want to rethink camping on the island, ferry rates for one vehicle and one person is about $50 for a round trip. The island has a small museum and the beach, it takes about 2 hours to drive the perimeter. Most folks camp on the main land, day trip to the island, as the museum is easy walking from the ferry dock. You can rent kayaks, take a boat tour of the islands, visit some of the area orchards, rent a sail boat, visit the casino. Its a beautiful area, but not a highly developed amenities area. It is geared more to the water sports, such as kayaking and sailing. Come and visit, you will fall in love with the peace.
