Okefenokee Swamp, Ga.

We are thinking about a trip to this place. Has anyone been there? Is it worth the trip? We have been to the Everglades two times. Are they similar?
  • We have stayed there several times over the years. It is quiet and certainly not a lot of traffic noise. Fishing in the boat basin believe it or not produces some nice panfish. Also produced a good sized alligator one trip. You can rent johnboats with motors and canoes as well. In early March many years ago we put three canoes in at Kingfisher Landing just off US 1 and paddled 36 miles across the swamp and took out at Stephen Foster SP. Great trip. No mosquitos in early March and the water was up enough for a current to where the water exited at the sill. That said, you can canoe or boat up to Billy's Island to see some of the early swamp habitation evidence - cemetery and partial foundations of a few houses. Use caution if you go there. BIG snakes of several species inhabit the swamp.
  • We were there two years ago. As others have said, bring what you need 'cause it's "out there"! Cell service when we were there was almost non existent, there was a spot where your phone "might" work according to the ranger that gave us a swamp tour. Speaking of tours, the swamp was a great tour, we saw lots of gators, wild pigs and TONS of other wildlife! We really enjoyed the remoteness and quiet we had while there. It's DEFINATELY worth at least one visit!!

  • This past April for Spring Break we visited Okefenokee for a few days. We visit both the East and West side. Not much to see from land you really have to see it from the water. We took the boat tour at both the east and west side. We camped on the west side at Stephen Foster. After doing the guided tour we decided to rent a small john boat on the west side and go back out on our own and do more exploring. We saw plenty of "Gators" and they like to feed on the fish people catch when fishing before they even get the fish reeled in.
  • If you go, there are other entry points to the swamp as well for day trips. For the swamp experience stay at SF SP in GA. Don't go when its warm, you may regret it.
  • We've been to both edges of park (E & W) three or four times and enjoyed it. The park has boat tours and kayaking, and boardwalks, plus a tower on the East edge.

It also has a small historical homestead to tour as well. Distance from east to west is a long drive, but worth the trip. We'd go back again en route somewhere, but it's not a true destination spot all on it's own, but for a few days it's worth the trip.
  • Nothing compared to the 'glades but worth a trip. Stephan Forster park is where you need to go and you have to take ($) a boat tour to see anything.
  • Stephen Foster SP in Georgia on the Okefenokee swamp is a nice state park. It’s about 18 miles from anything so bring what you need. They have a nice boardwalk into the swamp where you can see the local wildlife along with swamp tours. There are about 5 large pull through spots along a paved road that are 50 amp. The remainder of the spots are 30 amp. Frenzy
Don’t know if the video loaded but if so, it was shot in the canal leading from the visitors center to the swamp in 2010.
  • It appears that the Steven C. Foster state park is where to stay when visiting and has good reviews. We have been by it going down 441 to FL but have never stopped there so we may put it on our list of future stops too. Sounds interesting.
