Quality of Park Reviews

Looking to make our first multi state longer trip with 2-3 day stays at multiple parks. As I'm beginning to plan out our trip, I'm overwhelmed with discrepant reviews. One reviewer said the showers are filthy with bugs and worms crawling on the walls, while another states it's one of the cleanest parks they have ever been in. Friendliness of personnel, quality of park sites, list goes on and on. It's even worse when there's only 2 or three reviews, don't people review parks on a regular basis?

How do you separate the wheat from the chaff?
  • The review sites usually will let you check other posts made by the same reviewer. If someone's reviews are all glowing and positive, that may be someone who does their research and stays in very nice places.

To the contrary, someone who has many negative reviews is perhaps more of a whiner or complainer. After all, how many bad places will someone stay at before doing some research?

Also consider the age of the review - is it from 5 years ago or last month?

There has been discussion that RVParkReviews has declined/rejected less-than-pleasant reviews, to the point where I no longer use or recommend that site. (Others will, of course, rush to their defense, for what that's worth.)

I prefer Trip Advisor for reviews and AllStays and RVParky when finding places to stay.

Recently Good Sam Club has started accepting RVer-written reviews, as well: RVerParkReviews.
  • Generally if I have a particular question(s) about a campground I will either ask it here or one of the other camping forums... lots of good advice out there!

I will also check the reviews at RV Park Reviews Generally I will discount any extreme review and take into consideration the history of the reviewer and how many reviews the reviewer has posted.

Agree 100%. On top of that, people who are offended by something often decide that to really hurt that business they need to make up stuff that will offend all the people. For example, the guest is upset they were told to keep their dog on a leash and clean up after them. Since complaining they had to clean up after their pets and keep them on a leash would not dissuade the vast majority or RVers from visiting that park and the goal of the review is to hurt the Park, they instead post that the restrooms are covered in worms and worse, thinking that WILL hurt the business. You can pretty much be assured that if a park has filthy restrooms and showers, bad power or other true quality issues there will be repeated posts to that effect. If it pops up once out of 20 reviews, you can bet you have found a disgruntled customer.

Personally I like the quality of reviews on Trip Advisor the best
  • It is difficult. I have seen bad reviews because a neighboring camper made too much noise one night. I find that the avearage given on RV Park Reviews is pretty accurate. I use it regularly. You can get a high rating or a low rating, but the average is pretty accurate. It is helpful.
  • It obviously depends on what the reviewer expects from a park. Some people think everything should be surgically clean. Others, more tolerant, accept that sometimes 'clean enough' is good enough. Also one reviewer could have stayed during a bad period for the park, owner absent or sick maybe. And the other could have been there when everything was going smoothly in the park.

So put yourself in one group or the other and read the reviews with that in mind.

Lastly remember that an angry reviewer is motivated to slap at the party they are displeased with. While a someone who had a pleasant experience has no such motivation. I tend to weight the good reviews more than the bad.
