Raleigh and Winston Salem Campgrounds

We decided to take a week and head up to NC later this month. We need suggestions for campgrounds near Raleigh and also near Winston. We'll spend about three or four nights in each before heading home.

I've been looking and it seems the public campgrounds within a 20 mile drive of Raleigh are not full service. Falls Lake Rec area looks beautiful but doesn't have full service. I might be tempted to choose it anyway.

Suggestions?
  • Try Raleigh Four Oaks off of hwy 701. It is just a short drive to I-40 and a total of about40 mins or so to Raleigh. My wife has to go to mtgs at NCSU occasionally and that is where we stay. There are some sites at Dorton Arena on the state fairgrounds which are closer but there is always something going on there. You may luck out to check that too. DO NOT get Raleigh Four Oaks mixed up with Four Oaks resort.

Greensboro has a few cgs as well with one being the KOA. I have never stayed in that area since it is only 3 hours for me to get there. If I was going to stay it would probably be that KOA.

    Safe Travels
  • If you're looking for public, try Cliffs of the Neuse State Park (near Goldsboro, ~45min from Raleigh). It has about a dozen (new) full hookup sites. It is one of our favorite NC State Parks.
  • If you're willing to be a bit further there is a newer full-hookup camp out in Mebane called Jones Station. It's between Durham and Greensboro. We used to live in Mebane and stayed there while visiting the area last fall. It's a pretty nice camp but further out than you may want to be.

Ok I'm Raleigh ,go to the fair grounds and stay at the full hookup campground right next to the equestrian center...we always got a site...can't make reservations, but pull in on a site call the security guy and pay him
In Winston,Go to the Dixie Fairground and pull on a site to to the office and pay them..also full hookup....C
  • In the Winston area --

Tanglewood Park Campground is a beautiful county owned park. The campground is nice but many of the sites are nowhere near level. The park is in Clemmons, which is just a few miles west of Winston.

Oak Hollow Campground in High Point is a city owned campground. It's on a nice lake but same problem as Tanglewood--some of the sites aren't very level. The B section is a flat (gravel) area but the sites are tight. It's a 15-20 minute drive to Winston.

Here's the fairgrounds camping info for Winston. The area on a couple of sides of the fairgrounds is a bit dicey. I'm not exactly sure where the camping area is, but . . we'd stay there (and we're fairly picky about such things), but I'd keep my eyes open and be a little extra vigilant.
  • Thanks for the great suggestions. I think the fairgrounds in Raleigh will be perfect. The RV parking area at the Winston area fairgrounds did not look as good, we will probably go with one of the private parks.

Inglewood is a nice campground,BUT ONLY if you get the first 3 rows, after that they aren't close to level
We been doing the Dixie Fairground for many years, never had a problem....C
  • Stayed at fairgrounds in Raleigh a couple of years ago for a week while visiting my daughter and her family. Stayed the week of Christmas and it rained and rained and rained. Campground was situated where it stayed dry. Plus full hookups and kinda hidden off main roads, so no folks just riding through the area.
