Slab organization

Well, let me address some of the questions. There IS a plan to the Slabs.

Mike is a vet, with cancer. He and his wife Lynne operate the Oasis Cafe. It's on Low Road and if you were going to go..find it, say hello and ask where to park. They'll keep you on the right path. Tell Lynne I said hi..I'll be down in March for a visit.

If you like people...this place has it's share of artists, engineers, teachers, runners, hiders, campers, loosers, winners, writers, journalists. It has some druggies and drunks, vegetarians and some really poor folk. A person can't drive in, stay in their Rv with the doors locked, stay the night and leave in the early am. Not if you want to see what's going on.

Now a caveat....I am the kind that just wants to go places and say hi. I like off-the wall. I also don't 'do' campgrounds. I like colouring outside the lines. If you are super straight, uptight and scared of stuff....stay away. If you can stand to see nude people in the mud bath, people walking around with a beer and joint in their hands at 7am, if you can play a guitar or harp..flute, drum? If body piercings and tats are okay with you, if you can actually walk about and not stare, but can say hi...you'll do.

But, please stop saying how bad something is that you have never tried.

There is a difference between freedom and anarchy.

It sounds cool from a distance lol, But maybe its just because I like the location, and I definitely like the freedom. But Im sure I would get enough of that place really quick. Its not a place I would leave my rig and go off riding dirt bikes all day. Ive watched a ton of videos made there, a lot of which are no longer available on YouTube. I like freedom as much as anybody until people start throwing bags of trash all over the forest and desert and in our rivers.

The problem like these kinds of places - they start out with a good philosophy and a group comes in, stays clean and peaceful.

Next thing yo know, the place is a pack-rat haven, unclean, not maintained, and a buncha low-lifes and thieves show up and the 'good folks, the good ideas' get disgusted and leave - and the place becomes a dump.

Everything I've read about it makes it sounds like a fair number of the residents have psych problems and have a lot in common with bag ladies and the like. And at the least, most everyone is dropping out and/or running from something. I'm not accusing, I'm just asking if that is the case. It fascinates me and I do read whatever I come across. Thanks.

The Slabs..just the name starts the yelling. Some like, some hate. Most RV people talk about freedom and for sure, it is to be found at the Slabs. But then those same ones want a bunch of changes. And, no doubt, there are some thieves down there...now name me a city that has none. There is a laissez faire attitude for sure and one needs to be minding their own business. The Seal desert training compound is just over the hill tho, so it keeps things interesting.

Ever been to Burning Man? Not the same at all and yet, those that rant about that, also rant about The Slabs, having never been to either.

Having been and spent time...if you are a former military service person, you'll be in good company too. There are a bunch of Vets and they take their lifestyle very seriously. Very.

Read the rant on their trash/sewage tab attributed to the founder of that org. Not my idea of anyone I would want in a leadership position. Sounds like the Slabs are a real friendly place.

Go on YouTube and type in slab city and click enter. Its just about a bunch of people living off grid in the desert on a abandoned Base or something. They have been going there for over 30 years. Some of them live there. Its near Niland, California. Mostly just a lot of hipsters that want to live out there and be left alone. Edit/ It would be nice if someone cleaned it up and made people quit dumping garbage everywhere. But I don't think it should be closed to the public.

Agreed.

However, if they do take it over, I hope their first charitable task is removing the revolting hideous graffiti that is Salvation Mountain and returning it to its natural "un-marked" state.

Bottom line: I hope the people who took over Salvation Mountain lose their bid, leaving the Slabs as-is.
