My wife and I will be going to Houston, Tx. over Memorial Day weekend for a couple of days to see the new grandbaby. After that we plan to go to Louisiana for a few days before heading back home. We are looking for a good general area in which to stay. We unfortunately will not be bringing the RV on this trip, so we're not looking for a campground unless it might have some nice cabins. We would like to find somewhat of a centralized location that would allow us to visit the French Quarter, a couple of the plantation mansions, take a good swamp tour, and drive down to Grand Isle. I'm thinking one of the towns maybe within an hour of New Orleans? I've researched some of the larger towns such as Houma, Thibodaux, and Donaldsonville, but I would really prefer to get some ideas from some folks who are familiar with the area. Also some recommendations on good swamp tours, places to sample some good local cuisine, and any other "must see/do" places would be appreciated. Thanks.

I can't remember the name of the campground but in Breaux Bridge there are several nice cabins right on the bayou.mlots of awesome restaurants around there too.

Since you're not looking for a cg, I would go to TripAdvisor.com and check under accommodations. They have an excellent database of customer reviews, prices and locales there that we've found handy.

We have been several times and like Poches Fish and Camp in Breaux Bridge. They have newer cabin/park models that were nice. From there you can tour the Tabasco Factory, Konriko factory (they have a nice historical video). Also in New Iberia is Shadows on the Teche built in 1831. It is unique as the family lived in it until 1958 and much of the original furnishing and kitchen is intact. If you read you might want to read some James Lee Burke novels set in New Iberia. Detective Dave Robicheaux. Good reads. There is much to see and taste around there. We don't bother with New Orleans anymore.

Pontchartrain Landing RV Resort also has rentals. Tickfaw State Park has cabins. North of New Orleans off I-12.

In New Orleans don't miss the World War II Museum. Very interesting.

For a really special overnight accommodation, check out Oak Alley Plantation located about half way between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. This is well located to visit many of the plantations along the Mississippi river, plus it is really beautiful place.

In my opinion, I would avoid staying in Donaldsonville.

Try Luling across the River from Kenner, easy access from I-10 get into NO easy, go right up the river rd. to Plantation county (see Oak Alley pltn. great tour, nice restaurant, scene of many movies) go west to towards Grand Isle, Morgan City etc.

I would also suggest you look up the various parish tourist bureaus online, some of them have very extensive listings for attractions and must see's.

Second the Avery Island tour and the Konriko rice mill tour in New Iberia (buy some of the proprietary Pecan flavored brown rice, excellent).

Metairie or Kenner is where I'd hotel/motel. From there - everything is convenient. Go to nomenu.com for everything restaurant for the area of Greater New Orleans.

The great river road is between Baton Rouge and New Orleans; You might want to look into Bayou Segnette state park, just across the river from New Orleans, and has cabins

I'd stay in Kenner or Metairie, LA. Everything is going to be convenient from there that you've mentioned. Go to nomenu.com for everything restaurant in the area.

I have done some research of the Lafayette area and it is definitely an area I would like to visit. However, since my wife wants to see the French Quarter, I'm thinking that Lafayette might be farther away from New Orleans than we'd like to be. What about the great river road closer to New Orleans or the Houma/Thibodaux area?

If you have the time do as ccxnola suggests. In the Lafayette area there are a number of B&Bs as well as several campgrounds with cabins. As well as things previous posters mentioned there are swamp tour operators in Henderson. There are many good restaurants in the area.

Be sure to plan a visit to see the production of real Tobasco at Avery Island. For what you have envisioned with out the MoHo, do a couple of days in Lafayette to enjoy the true Cajun culture and then a couple of days at a nice B&B in New Orleans to experience the best in Food, music and entertainment.
