The years we snow birded in the RGV , 2009-10 , we went through 9 30# tanks in 4 and a half months. In the 3 years previous to that trip we had never used 1 30# in all our camping up north May-Sept.. I feel for you. Some always try to base their stay down in the RGV on the friendliness of the people. We have found many friendly people in all of our travels. Plus the lines at Walmart are shorter than the RGV ! :B Life is Good
I agree the weather is not what I had expected and at this poing I doubt very seriosly that we will return any time soon..As far as the people being more friendly that is very true. But I come south for the sunshine and warm weather. I have went thru two 30 lb tanks of propane in about 3 and a half weeks. - TomG2ExplorerThe Chamber of Commerce forecast is for great weather starting Sunday in the RGV. Funny how it is always two days away. :-) I believe them this time, even though it is currently 51 degrees with light rain in the area.
- John_JoeyExplorerstillwandering, next week should be picture perfect, hopefully you'll enjoy that before leaving north. This will be the time that some will post about great weather at half the price, and ignore the rest. No big deal until you factor in the time and money people spend to check it all out, then it stops being funny.
Safe travels, hope you find your slice of heaven that fits you. - stillwanderingExplorerI agree the weather is not what I had expected and at this poing I doubt very seriosly that we will return any time soon..As far as the people being more friendly that is very true. All the above is true, but today it may barely get out of the 40's in Rockport. Add in the wind and the "real feel" will be much less. Then for those that need to see the sun it will be cloudy for awhile...
Yes, Mar-May is awesome just like Nov-Dec is. If you're the type of Winter Texan that comes down for six months and has a non-moving dwelling setup for those in between winter months (wind breaks, casita with washer/dryer, etc...) you can survive very nicely. Problem is for those that are true moving RV'ers that come after the holidays and leave early (as you said "most winter Texans are gone.) For them they spent a lot of time and money for (as Tom said) "A ten day guest is looking forward to five cold days and five warm days" for their efforts/money. Not a great return on their investment.
My point is if you come to Texas as a mobile RV'er come for the right reasons, and not all of the hype (BS) of those that are trying to make you think they have FL/AZ weather at half the price. There's a reason it's half price, and if the prices do rise based on the hype, then there will be even a larger amount of open spots in the RV parks. - LynnandCarolExplorerwe are at 39 in Rockport. Was 73 yesterday! But when I look at IL, it was 10. We will ride it out. This actually the end of winter here and the start of spring. Mar-May has some awesome weather here, but most winter texans are gone. Well they start later this year due to the late cold up north.
- TomG2ExplorerForty two drizzly degrees today in the RGV. Almost everyone has quit saying how much better than it is than "Back home". A ten day guest is looking forward to five cold days and five warm days.

Stillwandering,
Don't know if you have a route back yet, but take a look at going up along the Gulf to Galveston, then take the free (huge) ferry over to the Bolivar peninsula, then up the Natchez Trace. Now that's what RV snowbirding is all about :)
I agree, that is a nice trip. We almost always go that way! - John_JoeyExplorerStillwandering, I'm glad it all worked out for your trip down to the RGV.
Harlingen is a great place to land also, that was a good call on your part.
While down here, don't forget to try the Texas Wild Gulf Shrimp. You'll never go back to farm raised shrimp after that. Good little 40 mile trip for you is South Padre Island for the shrimp. Dirty Al's seems to be a favorite with visitors.

When we first got here I was a little skeptical but it did finally warm up. We are at the Fig Tree Resort in Harlingen, nice park. Having a good time.
