Spruce knob wv

I have an idea of a trip before kids go back to school. We are 4.5 hours away and the goal is to catch some amazing top of mountain views. Question is .... Worth it? Are there any campgrounds nearby suitable for 35 ft fifth wheel?

  • There are several options since Spruce Knob can be accessed from different areas via different roads. I agree that the Seneca Rocks area is nice. Seneca Shadows Campground is within site of the rocks. There is a walking trail to the top of the rocks. You can also get to spruce knob from the area of the Cass Railroad which is a nice ride to the second highest point in WV, Bald Knob. The town of Elkins is close to all of these places. There is a scenic train that leaves out of Elkins. I stay at East Fork Campground in Durbin, it is a small private campground on the East Fork of the Greenbrier River. This is the home of the Durbin Rocket, another scenic train. There is a primitive campground on the road to Spruce Knob. It is close to Spruce Knob Lake. If it is cloudy or rainy you will not be able to see anything from the top of Spruce Knob and the drive is long from any direction. So choose a nice clear day to make the trip to the Knob.

WV is beautiful, and you can't go wrong near Seneca Rocks. I also love Canaan Valley, nice state park with great scenery at Dolly Sods.
  • Beautiful area and lots to see. Don't miss Seneca Rocks State Park on the way to Spruce Knob. Blackwater Falls is a great place to visit nearby. There are several nice RV camping areas in the area. Blackwater Falls, Canaan Valley State Park, and others not far away. I believe Moorefield has an RV park too.
Check out the RV Park review website for more local campsites/RV parks.
you will not run out of beautiful places to visit in that area.
  • And we stayed at a very nice campground in Ohio in May. Buck Creek State Park was very nice. Electric hookups, nice sites and a big lake with swimming beach.
  • I agree with downtheavenue that strictly for views, Skyline Dr would be best. Loft Mtn probably the best campground there. But there are many great camogrounds that don't have the views but have more to offer liek Goose Point, Sherando lake and Trout Pond.
  • Probably the best "top of mountain views" on the east coast is the skyline drive in Shenandoah National Park. Very informative visitors centers, good wildlife viewing, and great campgrounds w/o hook ups along the drive, too.
