Trip report to the east. The good, the bad, and the ugly

Thanks for everyone's contributions to help me get this vacation planned. I took over a year and a half to budget and plan for this trip; it was much anticipated.

Our background: we are in our late 30s and our children are 12, 10, and 6.
Our original plan was to take 16 days and visit Gettysburg, DC, Baltimore, Norfolk, Assateague Island, Philly, and NYC. I had lots of potential activities in mind, but I have learned that sometimes the spontaneous stops bring the most joy. That served us well for this trip!

Day 1: We headed out after work on Friday night. We wanted to stop at Gettysburg en route to DC Saturday so we needed to leave on Friday night to make it before the visitor center closed on Saturday.
We were delayed for about an hour of our 3 hour trip due to an accident. We rerouted with our gps and were 1 mile from the campground and the road was closed. Ok, it's after 10pm, and my 6 year old is exhausted and my 12 and 10 year old boys are hitting each other......let's find this place! 40 mintues later, we arrive at the campground. That 3 hour trip took us about 5.5 hours and we were toast when we arrived.

Day 2: We all slept well from Friday night. The drive to Gettysburg wasn't too far, 4 hours or so, so we slept in. We woke up happy and energized and ready to get the party started.

11:30am on Saturday on the Pennsylvania turnpike a car approached us and said, "Your camper tire is smoking!" Whoa. Ok, thanks to the person that alerted us. We pulled over hoping to fix a flat and continue on our way. No big deal, we have a spare and plenty of tools. Nope.

The bearings on the axle failed and when we stopped, it actually caught fire. Thank goodness for the fire extinguisher! We needed an entire new axle.

I made lunch and the kids were able to use the bathroom while we called and waited for a wrecker. Smart phones proved to be worth their weight in gold for this trip!

We arrived at the shop at 1pm only to have the mechanic tell us that he won't be able to look at it until Monday, then he'll have to order parts, then he'll have to fix it.........

That's life. I get it. I've had my share of broken furnaces and unexpected car failures while getting to work. But there's something so much more profound about having a poorly timed repair disrupt your only vacation for the entire year. If it had been Monday instead of Saturday, we would have been on our way that evening. But because it was Saturday, we were basically SOL.
I called every repair shop and camper store in a 2 hour radius and they all said the same thing, "Sorry, it's 1 on Saturday. We're all leaving and we don't work on Sunday." Let's just say that the kids all learned how to swear that day.

The first big day of our trip and now we're down for a few days at least. There is no pushing back the trip, our work schedules won't permit that. This is it, our only available time off. This is the only chance we'll have this summer.

We've decided our new family motto is, "Go big or go home!" We didn't want to go home, so we went big. We ditched the camper, went to Walmart for a cooler and totes for clothes, and headed off to stay in hotels.
This was not what we had planned and it cost a fortune. But having raised our kids in a camping environment, they knew very little about hotels and it was a fun experience for them.

  • Wow! You demonstrated your strenth.

And I am late to the party. :o Your later post came in while I was typing. Oh well, I meant well.

And what a nice family your have.
  • This is a time that will try the soul of a man; it's also a time for your real strength to be demonstrated.

I am making a couple of assumptions: that Saturday is yesterday, August 23, so this is ongoing, and that you have access to the internet and can get our messages of both sympathy and encouragement.

And I have to be honest that the days when I was a father of young children are long in the past. I did have my opportunities to demonstrate my strength as a father and as a man and looking back they are some of the highlights of my long life. I pray that this will be such an experience for you.

OK, lets see exactly where you are in Pennsylvania. Are you close enough to drive on to Gettysburg while your trailer is disabled? If not, what is in your immediate area. You have probably already tried to find out -- Google will be a better friend that any of us on the forum, though we care more! Draw a circle around you based on what you can reasonably get to while waiting for your trailer and "mine" the internet for every possible attraction or interest.

If you let us know where you are some of us will assist by doing some of the internet searching. On the other hand, you might just rather us stay out of it.

Anyway, if my two assumptions are correct, I hope you will let us know how this challenging situation develops. We are pulling for you and for your wife and children.
  • Day 3: Day 2 absolutely sucked. The kids were in the car for 12 hours straight. We arrived in Philly after 10 pm again, another late night. Then there was a party on the floor below us with loud music until 11pm. So, today, we again slept in. Not happy about being in a hotel, but we all showered with hot water in a roomy bathroom. It was at this point that I realized that while quickly grabbing clothes for everyone out of the camper, I forgot to grab underwear for myself. So, this portion of the trip was commando. Fantastic! Being last minute, I was able to score a great hotel with free breakfast for everyone. This was the best buffet breakfast we had during our hotel days.
After breakfast, we packed up and headed out to see the Liberty Bell.

Nobody cared to wait to get inside of Independence Hall so we just took a picture outside.

Next, we drove over the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and toured Battleship New Jersey. Everyone really enjoyed this tour. I got a ton of great pictures.

Then we headed over to tour the Eastern State Penitentiary. We all enjoyed this as well, but my daughter checked out about 10 minutes into it. She was a good sport and just tagged along for the remainder.

The boys got to attempt to open the cell and they enjoyed that.

We tail gated out of our truck in the parking lot for lunch. We had some cheese, veggies and dip and cold drinks. I never did get the Philly cheesesteak I had wanted, but that's ok. After two late nights and then seeing the Liberty Bell, the Battleship and the prison all today, we were all tired and decided to move on. I liked Philly, and I would go back again. Now we headed over to Baltimore. This was the shortest drive of our trip. We got slurpees while we filled up for gas and my 10 year old gave me the biggest hug for it.

Again, another last minute hit, we ended up with a suite! I booked the hotel as we drove to it. Baltimore was crazy expensive for rooms, but what else were we going to do? I took the two little ones to the hotel pool while the guys hung back in the room to order delivery pizza.

Day 3 turned out to be a really great day!
  • Aww man what a bummer .... you'll be talking about this one a long time though.
