Anyone install an 30 amp receptacle outside for inverter?

Hi guys

I am thinking of installing an inverter inside the front cargo hold and running a wire to the outside to a 30 amp receptacle so that I can plug my trailer plug into it when I want to use the inverter for power.

Has anyone done this? If so, can you share some pics and how you did it?

Thanks
  • There are a variety of cord covers that you can install in the floor and then route the 30A plug inside the compartment for the inverter.

Sounds like a 20A plug would also supply adequate power.
  • Hi,

    I'm in a class C.

I mounted the inverter behind the driver's seat. That kept it within four feet of the battery bank.

I fished wire back to the shore power cord "hatch" inside the RV.

I placed a 30 amp receptacle inside the hatch.

This way nothing is left outside to get wet, or to grow wings.

I shortened the shore power cord to 4 feet, put on a male plug, and added a female plug to the left over shore power cord.

I fished a dedicated inverter outlet in the kitchen area so that I can have extra power in the kitchen--and that can be used at all times, without "powering up" the rest of the RV.

I prefer manual systems, so I set the fridge to propane and leave the OEM converter unplugged on the 120 volt input side.

The unit I installed is an inverter/charger and has pass through capabilities.

  • What i am doing now is turning off my converter inside the RV so the battery charger is off and plugging the trailer into my small inverter which is sitting outside all the time. Plugging the trailer into the inverter this way lets me use every plug in the trailer when I need to.

What I am trying to avoid is having my new inverter sit outside all the time. Would like to install it inside the front compartment.

I guess it is as simple as drilling a hole in the compartment to the outside and running wires to the 30 amp receptacle and mounting the receptacle on the A frame but was looking for a bit cleaner look if someone has done something like this already.
  • Not following you completely. The inverter turns 12 volts into 120 v AC. You can install a transfer switch that would let the inverter send power to certain plugs in the RV. When you plug into shore power the transfer switch let's shore power go to those plugs.

If you install an inverter to your battery and then use your oem shore power cord your CONverter will be sending power to the batteries as the inverter is pulling off of the batteries.
