Carefree Travel'r Awning

The Travel'r Awning came on my Jayco Designer and I am interested in adding a Carefree SunBlocker shade to it. I would like to leave the shade on the roller when it is rolled up while camped to allow quick retrieval in case of an approaching storm. I will not leave it on the roller when traveling but:

Carefree says not to do it.
My dealer service manager says not to do it, but he has customers that do.

Another concern of mine is since this extra material, even though thin, will add thickness to the roller which might prevent the awning to completely close or will the increased roll size hit the side of my 5'er first preventing the complete closure of the awning?

If I have to do what Carefree suggests and that is to remove the SunBlocker prior to each retraction I won't get it. Too much trouble and time consuming if you are trying to get it retracted as a thunderstorm is approaching.

Thoughts?

  • I spend my summers on the Florida Gulf coast and an almost daily storm passes by. I just press a button and my awning is in in less than 30 seconds. An hour or less later back out it goes. Sometimes I don't have 5 minutes. I'm just not going to have to remove the shade every time. I will do without. I am just wondering if anyone leaves it on for use while camped only. I'm not going to travel with it on.
  • FIVE minutes to remove the sun shade and fold it up for temporary storage in the back seat of the truck for a approaching storm! Another FIVE minutes to roll up the awning. Well worth the time as opposed to the $ that could be lost!
  • I don't have a sun blocker, but I have seen many people with them who just roll them up inside of the awning. I can't say what's right or wrong.
