Flushing with grey water

I would like to make a plumbing modification to allow the flush toliet to use grey bath water rather then fresh water. I'm thinking that with a Shurflo pump, a three-way valve, and a check valve (to prevent fresh water contamination) I could extend the use of both my fresh water tank and grey water tanks. Has anyone tried this modification? How has it worked out?
  • Seems like a lot of trouble for the small amount of flush water used.
When we want to extend the gray tank life we dump the dishwater into the toilet. You could keep a bucket of dishwater in the john and use it to flush the toilet.
  • It has been done.... I found it at http://www.modmyrv.com/2009/07/22/rv-grey-water-potty-flush

    Sorry for no Clicky
  • When we are boondocking, I always use a small wash tub to do the dishes so I don't have to use so much water to get a decent amount in the kitchen sink. When done with the dishes, I pour the soapy water into a gallon jug that we use to flush the toilet with. We always wipe down our dishes pretty well with a paper towel before washing so food particles are at a minimum.

We don't boondock that often so didn't want to do something as permanent as you are talking about.
  • You have separate grey tanks.......galley & grey(shower)?

Shower....soapy grey water. It's own pump with strainer, switch, line to toilet.
Fresh water to toilet disconnected/capped....no tie to grey water line.

I won't be comfortable tying the systems together with valves/check valves etc.
If something should fail or be miss valved......sick people.....no thanks.

I went a much simpler route.........installed a drain valve on drain line close to end cap.
With it closed I can 'transfer' water from galley to grey, grey to galley, galley and/or grey to black just by using the OEM drain valves. Water equalizes and moves from one tank or other.
Seeing as the galley & grey fill up faster than black.....it moves from grey tanks to black tank. Some mixing may (probably) occur but they are waste holding tanks and get dumped/rinsed.
I'm much more comfortable with that then mixing grey/fresh water systems.
  • I am in agreement with the others, I think you will have a smelly mess on your hands. I don't think I would do it.
  • How would you keep the grey water from contaminating the pump. You'd need 2 pumps with separate systems. I think the grey bath water would smell after sitting awhile waiting to be used.

Grey water can smell almost as bad as the black. Be prepared.

At first I thought I agreed for sure but just bath grey water I don't think that would be true. Isn't it the galley grey water that stinks up the joint big time when the trap has no water in it?
  • With a triple filter system & no fresh water . . .

Grey water only to the toilet .
