Replacing coleman ac with vented sunroof?

New here, so I hope this is the right place for this.
I have a fleetwood prowler with coleman a/c and would like to replace the ac with a vented sunroof for more light and airflow. Anyone done this before?
I've seen Maxxair mentioned, but have not had any personal experience with them. Thank you.

  • Thanks for all the input. Gives me something to think about. Tim
  • The rooftop AC units and rooftop vent/fan units use the same 14"x14" square hole.

I swapped my roof vent for an AC unit last summer. It was a matter of peeling the original vent off, scraping off all the butyl caulk, covering up the screw holes with eternabond, and dropping the new-old AC unit in place. The reverse is certainly feasible.

Bought the AC off a scrapped popup trailer for $75. Used it over two hot weekends in August. Best $75 I spent in a long long time.

Thanks for the input. Been looking into the fantastic fan, and the Maxxair. I've heard the Maxxair is qieter, so I was leaning that direction so far. I Live in my trailer, so not too worried abour re-sale, But planned on keeping the coleman and not doing any permanent mods just in case. I mainly hope to ger a little more light in, and fresh air. Thanks again!

As for the heat here, I have a Much better unit cooling the trailer. Just playing with the idea for now, seeing if anyone has had any experience with this.

X2 on the Maxxair. Fan is outside the RV. I find it MUCH quieter than any of the fantastic type fans. The fantastic fan drove me crazy! I can't even hear the maxxair when its on. Comes complete with a cover so you don't have the added expense of having to buy a cover for it to leave it open like the other inside fans.

  • You live in Arizona, what are you thinking to get rid of an air conditioner? Keep the air conditioner and add a sky light.
  • Go for it, if you think you will never use the AC. I would want to be able to block the light to some extent---that is a lot of heat you will let in if/when you don't want it.
  • On a prior RV, I had a deteriorating Coleman AC unit replaced by a non-electric standard roof vent. An RV repair facility did the work for me, leaving the wiring in place in case I changed my mind.

The AC required 110V. A Maxxair or Fantastic Fan runs on 12V, so you may have to rewire if you want your new vent to be electrified.
  • I would buy a Fantastic fan and install it in the place of the A/C. The standard opening is 14" square (nominal) and should fit fine.

You might also consider installing the new fan in a new hole in the ceiling, not replacing the A/C unit. Many will not buy a trailer without a working A/C unit, or reduce the amount they will offer substantially. . .

    Good luck,

    Fred.
