Spackle or wood filler in screw holes?

Have remodeled the kitchen, made one cabinet shorter and one longer. Now I have a few inches of exposed seams between plywood sheets on the ceiling, and few nail/screw holes also in plywood.

Could I use a regular pink spackle? (it's almost white now after sitting on the shelf for years, need to add some water). Or get one of those "pencil fillers" - they come in white and other colors?

The only thing I'm worried about spackle is that it's not designed for movable structure, and might crumble out, getting in my hair, soup etc :). Original nail holes in ceiling are filled with something that looks like spackle, and are not even painted after, comes white on fingers when you rub it.

The filler question was just asked last week. I suggested to use a resin based spackle rather than the typical acrylic spackle. Sherwin Williams sells a quart can for <$10.

Which one, C50 spackling paste or C70 spackling compound?
  • What you're looking for is lath or screen stop. That small a dimension will be difficult to buy off the shelf. If you know a carpenter, have him rip some pieces for you off a common board.

The filler question was just asked last week. I suggested to use a resin based spackle rather than the typical acrylic spackle. Sherwin Williams sells a quart can for <$10. Resin based will adhere better and won't shrink or crack like acrylic. It dries to conventional white so if you need a color, apply it and use a color pencil to match.

    Duh.
I forgot about white peel-n-stick caps from IKEA that I already have laying around somewhere.

Still need to put some trim on exposed plywood seems on the ceiling - where I shortened the cabinet. But this is a different matter. They used some thin slats like 7/8 x 1/8 but I don't see it in Home Depot.
  • Fastcap.com They have small round peel 'n stick covers to go over screw holes in a wide range of colors, including "genuine" simulated wood finishes like KZ's "smart cherry" finish in our TT, whatever that is supposed to be. (Maybe there are smart cherry trees out there somewhere?)

They also have edge banding that could probably be used to cover a butt joint between adjoining pieces. Might be a good product to use where there could be a little movement, as opposed to a filler which has no give and can open up and not look the greatest.

White Fastcaps might be a good solution for ceilings.

Have used the round caps in our current TT and they work fine. Not a 100% perfect color match but close enough even for me. The ones that you can get at hardware stores and the like are not very good as the glue can dry out in a short period of time.
