- Cummins12V98Explorer IIILook at the latching mechanism also. I really don't care what others buy but I like people to look around and be informed before they spend their money. I like options when making a purchase so I can make an informed decision.
B&W keeping their employees on the payroll says a lot. - fish_n_foolExplorerThanks everyone for your opinions on the Curt hitch. I have located a used 20K hitch for 250.00. That I thought was a decent deal, but wanted to get some feed back as to what others thought of the hitch. I have the rails already so it would just be an upgrade from my 16K. Once I replace this tow vehicle I will consider other brands, but do not plan on using this TV much longer.
- JIMNLINExplorer IIIOne thing for sure when someone asks about a Curt/other hitch brand the B&W brand cheerleaders wakes up with the usual my B&W is better cause it has 1" jaws or other such advertisments. It used to be the Pullrite cheerleaders that made all the noise.
I prefer the SAF-Holland/Binkley type hitches for my 12k-30k flatdeck trailers but I don't make myself obnoxious about it. I've been around for many years using several different brands/jaws type hitches in my business but I know most folks like the brand they own.
OP
you won't go wrong with the Curt and for those that want to use the B&W thats fine also. No one will think less of you for using either. - jerem0621Explorer II

As I said in my earlier post I am very happy with my Q5 but I would like to add that if I buy another hitch I will look at the B&W very hard.
Back in the worst of the recession I read an article how the B&W Mfg Co retained its employees by letting them work on projects in their area on a volunteer basis and kept them on the payroll. These projects included playgrounds etc. if I remember correctly.
I will always try to support a company that goes above and beyond.
I agree, this is one respectable company! I watched that video too and was impressed with the companies commitment to their employees. - 12th_Man_FanExplorerAs I said in my earlier post I am very happy with my Q5 but I would like to add that if I buy another hitch I will look at the B&W very hard.

Jaw thickness has zero to do with high pinning a hitch. Hell even one of SAF-Holland 150k 5th wheel hitches on big rigs can be high pinned.
I see Curt 5th wheel hitch mentioned more than any hitch brand as the hitch of choice on a couple of LTL haulers forums I frequent.
For some the jaw thickness will make a difference. The bottom of each brands jaws are the same distance down from the 5th wheel plate the RV sits on so when hitched the jaws keep the kingpin from jumping up when going over bumps.
So with the B&W if you sit on top of the jaws "high hitch" you will have a 1/2" larger gap between hitch and RV kingpin plate and more noticeable to the hard of seeing with the B&W than Curt or another hitch with 1/2" thick jaws.
I have had no problem with high hitching but some seem to. Just something else to consider.
Another plus to the B&W is the solid steel welded construction of the hitch head VS the pressed steel parts of the Curt hitch. Just my observations when comparing the two side by side. - Cummins12V98Explorer III

No danger of high hitching if you are watching how it is for the correct entry to the hitch .

Here is a picture I snagged off of etrailer.com...
They have a king pin mocked up in the jaws. This is a Q24 but the Q20 looks the same...
As you can see the view is very clear to see if the Jaws are wrapped around the pin.
Thanks!
Jeremiah
Now someone please show the same shot with a B&W and you will see the jaws are twice as thick. The thicker jaws make it less likely to high hitch also if it's dark and someone is not looking closely.
Not saying the Curt is a bad hitch just want people to really compare before buying.
Here is a thread with the pics of a B&W Patriot however it doesn't have the king pin mocked up.

Here is a screen shot for those who do not want to scroll down... Sorry for the time and battery life at the top :(
The B&W is a super nice design too. I do like the jaws being thicker and I like how te jaws are machined as a matched pair.
Overall, both hitches seem to make it very easy to visually ensure the jaws are wrapped around the king pin..
Thanks!
