AC

Looking at buying 5th wheel. Are the ones with one 15 btu sufficient or do I need to look for 2.
  • Depends on what you buy, and where/when you plan on traveling. A good unit will suffice with a small trailer, but you really need two for a bigger trailer or if you're going to be traveling in the south in the summer.
  • Ya' know, you can always use one roof mounted AC and also a portable that ducts out the window.

I have one 15k in my 37' bunkhouse fiver and it cools everything fine.
The downside to having 2 AC units is you need to have 50amp service available. Not too many campgrounds in my neck of the woods have 50amp. At least not the ones I go to.

I had two ACs in my 30 amp coach. a good energy management system and they both ran fine. and with a 50 amp coach, just connect with 30 amp cords if no 50 is available.

  • I wouldn't have a large 5er without two ACs. at night you can run the non bedroom one, and vice versa. keep the noise away from where you are.

I've never sleep in a trailer with the second air conditioner installed. First glance is I don't think I would like an air conditioner humming and blowing away just an arms length above my head in our 5th wheel.

You can always park in the shade as much as you can and I like the idea of at at least getting your trailer wired and braced for a second air conditioner.

Having spent alot of time in the Montgomery ALA area in my working years I know how hot it gets there during the summer months...

  • I'm also from the Huntsville area. I would go with the second AC option if buying new. Especially if your are camping in the south. You may not always need it but good to have if you do.

I just purchased a new 5er last month and mine did not come with a second AC but was wired and braced for one.

Most of the units I looked at were wired and braced for the second AC so adding one at time of purchase or later would not be that big of a deal.

Although dealers are ordering more units equipped with a second AC I wouldn't base my purchase on whether or not it had a second AC sitting on top. As long as it wired and braced for one it can be added later.

Doing this will open up more choices for you.

I plan on adding a second AC myself as soon as I get enough dough for it:B
  • Size and construction of trailer important....we have small flagstaff and the 15k is more than enough.....fiberglass sandwich construction 26 ft box......
100+ 100% hum parked on rock with no shade cuts on and off several times an hour....good luck

  • Yes sir, it does get hot even in the best rigs in Texas. Two is the way to go if you plan to go to warmer climates in the summer. Consider also that having 2 units running means you need a 50 amp site vs. 30 amp with one. Personally I would rather have 2 but run on one when I can. Good luck!
  • Living here in Texas, I wished I had two! When the temp goes over a 100, one ain't enough! We get by with one, but next time, its two!
