I am looking for new tires for the 5th wheel and stopped by America's tire for a price. They can order the Maxxis tire but were pushing the Carlisle. My current tires are D rated. The only Carlisle tire they had are rated E. When I asked about my wheels working with the higher pressure of the E rated tire, they told me I would be fine running 65 pounds instead of 80. I always thought you run the max pressure listed on the tire. Has anyone heard of this? My tire size is 225/75R15D and the trailer axels loaded are combined 7,700 with a pin weight of 1,700.Thanks in advance,

Hold out for the D rated Maxis. Nothing wrong with running anload range E, it's being a Carlisle and THAT would be a concern to me.

You run the pressure for the weight rating... You do not need to run max most of the time.Like car tires my truck states 50 psi with a weight rating of 2300 lbs. Thats 4600 lbs I can haul at max inflation...LOL my axle rating is only 2700 lbs.. So I got the inflation chart for the tire and run them at 35 psi. At 35 psi the tires are rated at 1400 lbs which is 2800 lbs.. Just above the axle ratings...Mind you thats for two tires. If you have dual axle trailer the pressures may even be lower.

Look on the Maxxis web site. They have a chart of recommended tire pressures by weight. The max pressure on the sidewall is not necessarily what you should run, despite many people on this forum believing otherwise. I would trust the tire manufacturer long before anything I read on these forums or was told by a tire dealer.FWIW, I use D range Maxxis in that size on my fiver at 65 psi. My fiver is pretty much the same weight as yours. I have about 15000 mi on the tires with zero problems with much of the towing done at ambient temps over 100F. They are wearing nice and evenly all the way around. I would guess they're about half worn. Highly recommended. I would definitely favor Maxxis over any Carlisle regardless of the size or weight range.As always, YMMV...

225/75R15D carlile are rated at 2830 @ 80 psi. Thats 11320 lbs @ full psi... You dont need that if your only at 7700 lbs.

I always adjust the tire pressure when I get home from a tire dealer. Many are clueless about tire pressure for a trailer anyway. Carlisle tire warranty says to use max sidewall pressures. Check it out with Carlisle first. This is a problem we get into when we severally over tire a trailer.

Don't put E-range tires on D-range rims. Wait for the Maxxis D's or upgrade the rims to run E's. I was lucky enough that my aluminum rims were 80 psi rated even though my FW was delivered with D's. My bet is that they never even checked your rims for their rating, as many are stamped in the valley and the tire needs to be broken down to see it. Again, I was lucky in that mine are stamped on the inner bead. FWIW, I'm running the newer Carlisles due to Maxxis unavailability. So far, touch wood, they're working well for me. I watch them like a hawk. Got a thermometer to check them on the road, keep them on boards and covered in storage, and run no less than 70 psi when empty and 80 with any load.

X2, I am running Maxxis E's at 70 Psi and gained reserve capacity to match that of my wheels. Running less than the sidewall max is Ok as long as the maker gives you real ratings to work from. My wheels do not list a max psi but they do have a max rating and that is what I was matching the E tire too. Hold out for the Maxxis!

Weigh all 4 tires independently if possible when the RV is fully loaded. Use the heaviest tire and look up the tire pressure recommended for your tire size and load range. Then use the next higher pressure recommended.

All this is per GY Tech Support.

I ran GY G's on my Avion Platinum at 80-85 psi when the original tires were GY E's and the wheels were rated for 80 psi. After 5 years the tires were wearing perfectly even.

Same goes for tire pressure on your TV. Most think they should run max when towing, that is not always true. I run 45 unloaded and 60 loaded on the rear duals on my truck and 80 in the fronts at all times. RV pin weight at over 4,500#.

They gave you bad advice to sell the tires. Always run the pressure stated on the side wall. Under inflation or over inflation will cause the tires too overheat which damages the tire and will cause blowouts. Personal opinions will cause tire damage and blowouts, contact the manufacturer and get the facts. None of the expert wannabes will replace your tires when you take their advice when your tires fail and the manufacturer wont honor the warranty.

I would not suggest running any tire at less than that recommended on the sidewall. It will run hotter and heat is an enemy of tires. Secondly, Carlisle does not have a good reputation for reliability and if you are looking at their latest ST version it has only been on the market for a year or so and does not have a long enough track record yet.

The MAX pressure on sidewall is for the MAX Load Rating of the tire.

My truck tires have MAX of 80# and that is what I run them at when towing.
When not towing I drop them to 45# because they don't need to be pumped up to MAX.

My trailer tires have 110# MAX and I run them at 105# because the trailer weight is less than the MAX Tire Load Rating.

I prefer to run my tires at pressure for the actual weight they are carrying.

Others run at MAX Pressure regardless of weight.

The 'D' rated tire probably has a MAX Load Rating of 2540# @65#
The 'E' rated tire probably has a MAX Load Rating of 2830# @80#----at 65# load rating would be same as 'D' tire (2540#)

I like the 'E' rated tire due to the increased load capacity.....but NOT a Carlisle Tire.
Maxxis has that size in an 'E' rating but you still have the issue of the rim load/pressure rating (stamped inside valley of rim)

As long as they have the tires off to install Maxxis E.... have them check the wheel for a stamped pressure rating.

An E at 65 psi has the exact weight rating as a D at 65. But if you can run 70 to 80 then you have some additional margin.

You can probably run them at 45-50 psi and get the best wear..

Shows the same tire here at 50 psi 2150 lbs x 4 = 8600 lbs....... Thats what I would run them at..
