Atwood refridgerator

My husband and I are on our 7th fifth wheel since we have been married. So, we are not new to an RV, but we have always had a Dometic brand fridge. We now have an Atwood and I am wondering if it supposed to be noisy. There is a fan sound that is quite annoying, especially at night, and goes off and on periodically. Also the fridge is not as cold as we think it should be on the next to the highest setting. Is this noise normal for an Atwood fridge or should we get it checked out?

Old Buscuit - thanks. Just pulled my upper refrig cover off and the upper baffle they built to deflect the air does not meet Atwood's specifications as detailed in the owners manual you provided the link too. Additionally, the insulation is a little lacking too. So tomorrow, I'll be going to the hardware store and getting what I need to correctly deflect the air and add more insulation around the sides and top of the refrig.

Draft...it's all about proper air flow and no dead air spaces.

    Good Luck!

  • Fridge.......whole complete unit with 2 compartments
A freezer section and a food storage compartment

    Freezer section should be 0*F
    Food section should be 36*-42*F
  • yep misprint. the temp we experienced int eh freezer with the same thermometer showed 7* at one point but i don't think it is accurate as all the food was frozen solid. We also had some fruit get almost froze in the fridge. I need to buy a good fridge/freezer thermometer. Sorry for the oops!!!

We too are not new to RVing and now have an Atwood in a Fifth Wheel and it is in the slide. fan can not be heard unless outside, it is a must. like earlier said, open the fridge vents and make sure there are not any obstructions. Ours felt warm also, doesn't get as cold as fast as our previous Dometic, but works fine in about a full day. You can still slide the sensor up about a half an inch on the fins to get it a bit colder. about 35* in ours and 27* in the freezer. if not working make sure you get fixed under warranty. other post have mentions the electrical side of the unit may have an issue that will be fixed under warranty. Good Luck & Be Safe ! ! !

35*F in food compartment is GOOD

27*F in freezer..........:H this is a misprint correct????
  • By the way, I always run mine on the coldest (5 lights) setting this time of the year.

  • AN Absorption fridge requires:

Proper Installation by RV Mfg.-----many times this is NOT done correctly
Sufficient air flow (Draft)-------this can be enhanced by using fan(s) and baffles
Being Level..........Atwood uses a TILT Sensor
    Sufficient heat source

I suspect the first two items are lacking on your Atwood Fridge

HERE is an Installation/Operating Manual for your fridge.

Pg. 3 depicts proper installation/clearances/baffles for Atwood Fridge in a slide out. Fan is used.
IF not in compliance with Atwood Requirements....fridge will never get as cold as it should.

Remove upper/lower fridge vents and have a look.......minimal clearance, baffles, and fan.
    IF not correct....warranty item!!!
  • I assume that your new refrigerator is in a slide out. If the reefer is in a slide out, you can't vent it through the roof. Therefore, you need to use a fan to provide ventilation. I'll bet your old Dometic was not in a slide. So it didn't need a fan to provide the ventilation.

I have an Atwood in my current FW, and we've gotten so used to the fan, that we don't even notice it anymore.
