Curt hitch - Ford prep

For those with a Curt hitch for Ford prep, how much pressure do you use to close the latches to hold the hitch? Do you use hand pressure, have to use some force or take a hammer and beat it closed? Instructions say hand pressure but I have 2 handles that don't take much force. If I adjust castle nut to next setting it will take alot of force to close them.

  • still waiting for my new truck to show up and try my B&W in it, but the Reese unit that was in the truck in the showroom did not barely require any force to mount and dismount. Like others have said though, may just need to be broken in a little. If after a few uses its still tight, call Curt.
  • Thanks Travlingman for the post after you talked to Curt. My Q20 behaves like yours and you helped me have some peace!
  • Talked to Curt and they said that it is no problem. Said with the adjustments it is normal.
  • Hi.. I have a Curt 5th wheel hitch in my 2016 dodge 2500. This was installed by the dodge dealer. I have used it last spring, summer and fall on our travel which included a 2 week trip from co. To Ca. No problem with hookup or unhooking. Sorry about your issues. I would. Contact curt tech. Department. Jim2007
  • I have the Reese puck to rail adapter and it works fine with easy pressure. I would go for the easy setting.
  • After using it a while on the looser setting the paint with settle in and you should be able to go tighter on the castle nut. Chris
  • I would also call Curt. I have the Ford prep, but with a Reese Elite hitch. Somewhat similar to yours. At one setting, the handles turn easily. Next setting requires considerably more pressure. I set mine to the easier setting and it works fine. No noise, and the hitch is not going to come out as long as you latch the handles so they can't turn.
  • I'd contact Curt Tech support and ask them about the issue.

  • I do not have a Curt, but beating on it, should not be necessary. I am wondering if there is a washer under the castle nut, that could be changed out, or another thin one added to correct the problem.

Most Ford owners have DEEP pockets! As mentioned above, a more expensive hitch could solve the problem. :)
