Front electric jack making noise, any advice?

We have a 2012 Cougar High Country and when we parked it yesterday the drivers side front electric jack was making noise when we extended it to remove the trailer from the truck. It was a clunking noise. The passenger side is normal. Any ideas or what should I be checking? Any advice is appreciated!!
  • Just wanted to follow up on this. We ended up having the gears/leg replaced. The gears were stripped. Works great now..... We also painted a line on the front jacks so we would have a visual clue to not retract them too far.
  • Ours started squeaking like it was galling . I was going to lubricate them and found Grease zerks on the top rear side of each landing gear. I greased them and Wala ! no more squeak.
  • I had the one on the passenger side making a lot of noise on our fairly new RV. I ended up having to replace it because it locked up. It did wait until we returned from a 2800 mile trip and failed in my driveway. I had to identify the system as I could not find any type of manufacturer tag. Hopefully yours is just the bolt hitting as suggested.
  • Mine did the same thing. I read where there is a clutch on the drive motor and if it becomes too hard to crank the clutch will start to slip causing a clunking noise. The cure for mine was to remove the cap from the top, just pry it up, and put some oil in the leg. Good old 20 wt worked for me. On the street side the leg was between a couple walls making it impossible to get at the cap. I removed one of my propane tanks and drilled a hole through the wall then through the side of the jack. I was then able to get some oil into the jack. After letting it soak awhile, it now works like it did when new. The jacks had dried out and were binding inside. Now they work great. Hope this helps.

  • The nut on the bolt holding the linkage arm from the drive motor to the passengers side leg may be coming loose and hitting on the drive motor. I have a similar issue but it's because the bolt put in by an RV repair outfit is too long and it is hitting on the motor body making a "clunking" sound. I'd check the linkage nut and bolt.
  • Oh, and it started doing it before any weight was put on it.
