Generator suggestions

We have a 5th wheel setup here on our land as a temporary house while our primary home is being built.

Being rural, there have been several times where we have lost power for hours at a time. Yesterday we lost power twice. Once for 2 hours, the next time, for nearly 7. And this is Texas where the temperature is 1 million degrees!

So I was wondering, because I know nothing about generators, what type of generator would be appropriate for a 5th wheel. Basically, I would like one that I could run the AC/heater from. Please let me know what you all think. Thanks!
  • I agree with the others that you are going to need at least 3kw to run your a/c, and larger would be better.

Beyond that, it's difficult to know all your circumstances, so I'll just throw out some things to consider.

Realistically, how many times will you want to get out and start the generator? Maybe you should consider electric start. Can your wife/kids start it if you are not around? Should you consider auto-start with a transfer switch?

How about security? Can you leave it sitting out? In your truck bed? Assume it will be too heavy to move by hand. Two in parallel have the advantage of being light weight, and in the winter you could run just one.

Lots of generators out there, but you'll need to consider those things before you select a unit.

Make sure it is an inverter. Too many things don't run well on modified sine wave versions.
  • Hi,

I own a Yamaha sIEB 3000 watt (2800 VA) inverter generator. If I were buying tomorrow I'd purchase the 3500 watt Champion inverter generator.
  • Will power become more reliable when the house is built?
Have you considered what it would need to keep the home running when you have an outage?

Could be you should be looking at 12kW or even larger powered by natural gas if available or a 48 hour supply of diesel.

Otherwise for the RV I recommend a pair of Honda 2000 to run in parallel.

This is an RV forum, so you got RV answers, so far.

But consider, if your power is going out frequently now, it will go out frequently to your new house too, right? So why not consider a full house generator now. Use it to power your RV now, and switch it to power your home when it is complete. Probably a discussion to have with your general contractor, not an RV supplier.

Way ahead of you on this one. Part of our home plans include wiring for and putting a generator on the house to run everything.

What I would like to have for now is a generator that we can specifically move around and take with us in the Fifth Wheel should we ever need it.

Since you're talking about using it later on, you're pretty much locked into a quiet inverter-style generator; Honda, Yamaha, etc. 3k =minimum=, and that will run the A/C and charge the battery(ies), but not much else. I'd want a 3500-4000w to be comfortable. Frankly, unless you're well-shaded, one A/C is just barely going to keep you comfortable.

  • To power your AC & anything else like TV etc, I would suggest a 3000 watt unit. If you want dependable reliable power on demand that is not loud go with a Honda or Yamaha. You will forget the price long after the purchase. This is not an item to be cheap with. Stay away from loud unreliable lower end off brand units. They will let you down when you need them most. Best of luck

One AC... 3K minimum. Two AC 4K minimum. In Texas add a + to those numbers. If you want to run the micro at the same time add 1 to each number for your trailer.
You might want to buy one big enough to run your house. If you are on city water a 3K will run your new house without AC. If on a deep well you'll need 5K. If you want AC too, you need to look at the amps of your AC unit and add that to 3K
  • The above is very good info. But a little more info from you would help provide better feed back. Does your trailer require a 30 amp service or 50 amp? Do you have 1or 2 A/C units?
