How much toy weight can a typical smaller toy hauler handle?

I'm talking about a 5th wheel.

& wonder what is realistic for what most toy hauler can handle weight wise?

I doubt it can handle my Suzuki Samurai?
Or maybe a Fiberglass VW Buggy?

I'm thinking they are mostly for dirt bikes & maybe a SideXSide or golf cart?

  • Not only look at axle rating but also look at your ramp rating.

Just a note a smaller toy hauler with the same axle rating as one that may be bigger will have a larger cargo capacity just because the trailer weighs less...
  • My 11.5k lb GTWR bumper pull weighed under 7500 lbs dry which gave me 4000 lbs payload if I didn't fill the water and fuel tanks. Adding 60 gallons of gasoline and 150 gallons of fresh water plus our gear gave me about 2000 lbs remaining for toys.

Some of the cheaper toy hauler have low weight rated load ramps. Make sure yours can handle the vehicle weight even if payload is sufficient.

I went to a 3500 lb enclosed trailer with about 6500 lbs of payload that I pull behind a truck camper and typically have it loaded with 2500-4500 lbs of gear and vehicles no longer worrying about the excess weight.
  • Not sure what you are defining as "small", but I have a 41' 5th wheel, so I guess mine would be "big"?
I put my sandrail in it all the time, 2720lbs.
The heaviest part of my rail is behind the rear axle of the toyhauler.
Toyhaulers are designed to carry weight, so not sure why you think putting a lot of weight towards the back is bad?
  • Cargo capacity tells you what you can haul, ramp capacity tells you what you can load. Some ramp capacities are fairly light and like you guessed, are intended only for motorcycles.
  • With full fresh water tank and propane, my Carriage C-Force is placarded by the OEM for an additional 2600lbs of cargo capacity. Out of the 2600lbs max 2000lbs in the garage area.

There are some that are designed for this but you'll need something lager probably triple axle. We have members there that haul Jeeps inside, and at least one with a Zuki. Once you know your dimensions and weight you can look through the Complete List of Toy Haulers (main forum) the mass produced ones from Thor & Forest River are less likely to have what you need but some of the independent ones that still do custom work might. Playmore, New Horizon, maybe the new Weekend Warrior.

That said there are a lot of users that went to a Diesel pusher motor home and trailer for even greater weight hauling potential.
  • My toy hauler garage has a sticker on the wall to not exceed 3000lbs, even though my empty weight plus 3000lbs exceeds my GVWR of 19000lbs. I have been told that its ok to exceed the 19000lbs just as long as I don't exceed the 21000lb axle rating. Tires are even rated above that at 24000lbs so I really don't pay much attention if I go over the GVWR rating.
  • Most toyhaules have a sticker in the cargo area, 2k,3k etc rated cargo capacity. This is not the gvwr but is part of gvwr.

For example mine had a sticker on the door 3k# in cargo area. Yet my vin sticker on the nose states 6800# 10200# dry 17,000 gross gvwr.
  • I'm figuring its not a good idea to have a heavy toy out back , at the rear of the trailer?
