- Old-BiscuitExplorer IIIThe reason they are located in back of oven is that is where the main flame first comes in contact with flame while flowing thru main burner.
Use one of them long BBQ lighters.
That's what I used about 6 yrs. ago...........my pilot flame is still ON - rhagfoExplorer III

Okay, I for one am confused. Mine is so simple to light. I wonder if I'm doing something wrong now. All I do is grab one of those long lighters with a trigger, and get started. I push in the knob, and hold the lighter over the pilot hole. It lights in a few seconds. I wait about five seconds, let off the pressure on the knob and then turn on the oven. It works everytime, and I'll bet the whole process takes less than 10 seconds.
Wow, and I thought I was doing it wrong, keep several of the long handled lighters in the rig, Oven pilot light is a good use, lighting the bee's wax starter sheet in the campfire is another. - PatStabExplorerI like that need to get my husband to do that for me. Lighting it is an awful job as others say.

Amen, I did the same thing after seeing that post. It is wonderful. No more having to crouch down and light that stupid pilot. Thank you James.

It lights the oven and the stove top burners with the push of a button. Wife likes it.:W - past-MIdirectorExplorerAfter 25 years of Appliance repairs there is a simple trick that's been used for years on standing pilot ovens and only takes one person. First you need a good 6" long or longer is better lighter, turn oven knob while holding it in to about 300 degrees or what ever temperature you need to bake at, light lighter and hold by pilot burner. The flame will light a little larger than pilot since you're calling for the oven burner pilot not just the pilot. Do not panic since the thermocouple takes at least 30 seconds to heat up hot enough to open the gas safely valve for gas to flow to the burner so you have time to be sure the flame stays on and close the oven door so oven can preheat.
Learned early standard matches are just about useless for lighting an oven. The extra long will work but not as good as gas lighter. - 2oldmanExplorer IIBoy I'm lucky to not have a button.

Arg. I don't do that.
