Local dealer says stay away from new Maxxis tires??

Talked to a well known local tire shop that specializes in trailer, utility and truck tires. They said that up until recently the Maxxis M8008 tire was by far one of the best. However, tires manufactured in the past year have seen a large spike in failures.

He's recommending Hercules STR's (Made in USA) as he's had very few come back. They are rather low priced compared to other recommended tires or possibly LT's (many threads on LT's so no need to duplicate!).

Two questions:
Has anyone heard of issues with recently manufactured M8008's?
Has anyone heard good or bad about Hercules STR's?

X2 At best this is hearsay from a very biased source. The markup and thus profit, varies dramatically from tire to tire. I put Maxxis' on my old TT and they were excellent. IMHO: Too many years of being the best to listen to one source with an obvious agenda. I'll bet he would make you a hell of a deal on some China Bombs. :R
  • Haven't heard anything negative lately about Maxxis ST tires. Already have four seasons on current set of Maxxis tires and I estimate going a couple of more before getting another set. I guess any tire manufacturer can have a bad batch make it to the marketplace, will wait to see if newer Maxxis ST tires begin to indicate a higher failure rate compared to years past. Hopefully not as I have grown dependent upon their durability, effectively serving our needs on our current 32' 9K# TT.
  • i installed 4 new maxxis this past june and they look great and zero problems

  • Dealer sells Maxxis as well as Carlisle, Hercules and Greenball. He recommended not going with Carlisle as he's had problems although not enough sales of their newer Trail RH to say anything. Says he carries them all because customers request them.
  • Have not heard anything one way or the other but.....it's not at all unusual for a dealer to recommend the brand they sell. I will wait until I see an increase in complaints from noninterested sources.
  • To this point I've not seen or heard many complaints about Maxxis tires. I have a new set (Fall 2012) and my previous set was going on 8 years old but they were in great shape. Had a valve stem failure that took out one so I upgraded to M8008s load range E. Old ones were D. No feedback on Hercules though I had a set on my old truck and they wore out fairly fast (apples and oranges). Does that shop sell both or just one of the brands?
