Michelin XPS ribs on fiver and truck?

We have Goodyear 235/85/R16 tires. G rated with 7,000 lb axles. We are looking at replacing them with Michelin XPS ribs. Are there any issues we need to consider before making this purchase? Unfortunately, the new tires we bought when we bought our rig show a date of 2012 week 39, so even though we have only had them for 2 years, it sounds like we should be replacing them next summer of 2017 because they will be 5 years old. We have 18000 road miles on the RV so far at the end of year 2. We are planning a long trip in fall 2017. Your thoughts or experience with either these tires or the Goodyear?

I have looked at previous tire threads, but am especially interested in hearing from people with similar units and tires.

We would also like your feedback on using these tires on our 2015 Chevy Silverado 3500 that currently has LT265/70R18 load range E Goodyear Wrangler SR tires with 39000 miles so far. Costco recommends Michelin LTX A/T2. Besides the 70R18, this tire also says 124R. What is that? Hubby had found people happy with Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 tires. What is the difference between these 3 when pulling a fiver? We are F/T, so this is not for an occasional weekend trip...

Where have you purchased these tires? We have previously liked Les Schwab service, but they don't carry these tires. We also have used Costco, but don't know if they know how to deal with changing tires on the fiver... Thanks!
  • Michelin XPS Ribs in size LT235/85R16E are only rated at 3042 lbs @ 80 PSIG, so they would be inadequate for the OP's 7000 lb axles. They are highly recommended for 6000 lb axles. For 7000 lb axles, the OP would need a G-rated tire such as the LT235/85R16G Goodyear G614 RST rated 3750 lbs @ 110 psig.

Michelin XPS Ribs are not available in 18" sizes, so they are not a candidate for the OP's truck. The Michelin LTX is a proven tire for this application in either the M/S2 (highway all-season tread) or A/T2 (all terrain tread). The Michelin Defender LTX is a newer, supposedly improved version of the Michelin LTX, but they don't have the proven track record of the LTX M/S2.

  • My understanding is that the Michelin being an "E" rated tire would be fine on 6K axles, since you have 7K axles you need to stay with a higher rated LT tire.
  • I just had installed (Apr16) at Costco 4 Bridgestone Duravis 250's in 235/85R16 on my 2005 NuWa Hitchhiker for about $907 out the door in Albuquerque, NM. These are load range E. Currently in Rockledge, FL.
  • XPS Ribs do not come in "G"s. They are E rated and I love them on my signature 5ver. My local tire guy told me I would never wear them out, that they would rot first. This upcoming fall makes them 7 years old, and have no cracks and plenty of tread. I do cover them and use 303 UV protectant on them. This will probably be my last year before buying another set, but some say the have a 10 year lifespan. They have over 20K miles on them. When they were installed they were only 4 months old based on the DOT date.

I have Michelin LTX MS/2s on my truck, E rated, 265s R16s. I love them, they seem to be wearing OK. They are wider than the OEM 245s I had on there and I can tell the difference.

    Hope this helps.
