There has not been any free lunch in ride verses carrying capacity. RAM MAY be changing that. The 2500 is still the wrong tool for mid to larger 5th wheels. The new just hitting the streets 3500 with rear air assist may be a game changer.
Given that the 2500 has the low capacities noted above, the 3500 SRW with 12,300 GVWR and around 4,000 pounds of capacity on the rear axle, makes a pretty good tow rig with a trailer weight of just over 17,000. 17K x 20% gives a 3400 pound pin weight and is way beyond what the 2500 can carry.
The 2500 list a similar trailer weight, but will not do it because the pin weight of a 17K trailer is to much.
NOTE: RAM is separating the 2500's and 3500's much farther apart than then have been in the past. The blurry line between the 2500 and 3500 SRW is become a lot more defined with a large scale tip to the 3500 SRW.
Hopefully someone will be along with a 3500 SRW with rear air to provide a real world report.
Cummins12V98 will be providing a ride and towing report with an air ride dually shortly!
