To the OP... here's my story. Back in late October 2005 I purchased a new 2006 Dodge 2500 4x4 QC CTG short box truck, this truck pulled and handled with ease our then Coachman travel trailer 297RKS aprox 30 feet long.
In September of 2006 the real world experience/adventure began. We bought a brand spanking new 2007 Mountaineer 5ver 336RLT with his & hers bathroom sinks, open floor pan and other options we liked. The dry hitch weight was 2090 lbs and truck payload was per door sticker 2071 lbs.The dry pin weight quickly went up.
I needed more payload... so for mental gratification and safety I installed some rear after market overload springs to gain additional payload... problem solved right... no way,not in my case, the "seat of pants meter" was pegged !!
The Mountaineer is 36 feet long (longer when the rear bumper is slid out) and 12.9 feet tall. Its safe to say I knew it was back there. The 5ver was pushing the 2500 short box truck around.
When fully loaded for camping, clothes, food, tools, etc, etc, you really knew it was back there. It only took 2 trips to the North Carolina mountains curved roads and 7 percent downhill grades to know I needed more truck.
In June 2008 I bought a 2006 Dodge 3500 DRW long box 4x4 qc ctg from the original owner with 14k miles. The difference is night and day,one has to experience both trucks with the same trailer to feel the difference.
I now have payload to spare and feel safe, the larger platform of the dually controls the 5ver with ease and is enjoyable to tow with and rides better empty or loaded than my 2500 which is now my daily driver with 180k miles.
In a few years when we upgrade to a newer and better 5ver I'll already have enough truck, current mileage is 49k for the 3500 dually.
You're presently in the perfect position to get the right truck for the job.
