New tires with lumpy sidewalls.

We just put new tires on our tow vehicle. The tires are Michelin Defender LTX MS LT265/75R16 123/120R E.

They seem like fine tires except the sidewalls are irregular in shape. Sort of wavy like, only not all over, just every now and then.

I've talked with a couple people who know about tires and both of them told me not to worry about it. One guy said that after 10,000 miles they won't be wavy anymore.

I'm a skeptic here. What do you think? Thanks.

  • "Wavey" depends

If the bulge in inward from surrounding sidewall it is the result of extra body ply material at the splice. This is a cosmetic condition.

If however it is a bulge outward that is a potential safety issue. It may be the result of broken body ply cord from hitting a pot hole, curb or road trash. The tire needs to be inspected, maybe dismounted and checked by a trained tire tech not just someone that sells "round black things".
  • Interesting as I have some 3 month old Michelin Defenders, 275/70x18, and they didn't have nor currently don't have any waviness. I have had other brands, Yokohamas, Continentals and Kumhos on other pick ups that have had waviness that lasted as long as the tires were on the truck but they were never a problem. The only negatives that I've seen with that tire is some diesel MPG loss (1-2 mpg) and big balance weights. As far as the MPG loss - after having a F350 w/V10, not a big deal. Balance weights - also not a big deal as long as they don't get 'thrown' off but they look like c##p.

Waviness - if you still have Tow Max tire bombs on your 5er, take a look at those wavy sidewalls if you need a laugh. I think I got sea sick
  • No issue, but funny thing is had to explain it to a gal at Canadian Tire up here, I mounted my own truck tires then took them in for balancing, and she being in charge of shop said no, tires were unsafe, so although I was in a rush, I realised she had not been properly trained, so took the time to explain then had another fellow there come also say it is okay, so she admitted she learned something and I am glad I could educate someone.
  • Michelins on the fiver were that way new, smooth now. Goodyears on my new Jeep Wrangler exhibit the same thing.
  • Yep. It will most likely go away in time. My new truck had them. And at 7500 miles now they are gone.
  • I built tires at BF Goodrich years ago and I agree, nothing to worry about. It's how they are built that leaves that wave so to speak.
  • I've had various tires, including Michelins, exhibit the same waviness and never had a problem with them.
  • It's called tire dimples. I've had them on many new tires. Not really a problem. According to tirerack, as long as it is an indentation, you're ok. If it is a bulge, there might be something to worry about.
