My personal experience is that I can NOT hit when going forward, either right or left with the truck and FW in my sig. ALL will hit going backwards; a slider just gives you a bit more room. Possibly, a 2wd truck will turn tighter than a 4wd. Also, different model years of the same truck might have different turning radii. If you have any qualms about it, get the slider, if not, just use care until you know how it all works together.

  • I have a short bed F250 with the PullRite auto-slider and I am getting rid of it. Way too heavy and clunky. Going with the Draw-Tite gooseneck adapter (for a clean bed) and the Andersen Aluminum Ultimate 5th wheel hitch. It weighs only 32lbs. Check out the YouTube video on it.
  • I had a 2006 2500 Chevy crew cab. Upgraded to a 3500 GMC crew cab both with the short bed. (6'6"). I had a pullrite superglued in the 2006. I went with the B&W companion slider in the 2015 3500.

I have a 2013 Chaparral, I felt it was better to have it and not need it then to not have it and need it. The cost difference between the two is less then my deductible and it would really suck if I damaged my truck.
  • If you just pull local and a couple times a year, then maybe "save your money" and take a chance without a slider. If you are going to do any traveling or take a few extended trips then you have two choices:

    (1) spend the money up front and get the slider, or
    (2) pay your deductible every few years for repairs to your rear window, truck
cab, and front of your fiver.
  • I have a short bed one ton and a companion. Haven't needed a slider yet.
Before that I had a short bed 3/4 ton and a pro series non slide hitch. Flat front coachmen fifth wheel and never had a problem with that either.
Just be mindful of what's going on in tight situations and save your money.
  • A lot will depend on the fifth wheel you choose. I had a slider in short bed F350 and only used 4-5 times but I believe in the saying its better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. The B&W is an awesome hitch and you'll appreciate the quality and smoothness when towing.
  • have not found one. going to buy a used 5th wheel.
