Organizing Basement

I'm curious to know what others have done to organize their basements. I dread the the thought of unloading everything just to get that widget out. I understand the concept of putting the most often used items in last but there have to be other ideas to help organize everything. This seems to be an area where an inventor could make a lot of money.
  • We also use totes. In the front compartment (no genny), all the stuff to quickly set up the campsite, rugs, tables, dogs ex pens. On the campsite side of the basement, the rest of the stuff for the campsite, ez up canopy, BBQ, cook stove, chairs and small tables that hold the gin and tonics. Other side, all the goodies to hook up the 5er, tools, extra parts. The totes work well, I've not wanted to give up the space the sliding drawers take up, the totes slide easily on the carpet and gives me another use for the awning pullout rod...;)
  • Rubbermade totes work wonders. You can find them in various sizes to fit your compartment.
  • Tool box, hoses, etc. go one the street side of the basement. With any luck I won't constantly visit this area.

Items that are too big to go in boxes, like folding chairs, all go to the front end.

On my rig that leaves a spot (curb side, door on the left) for smaller stuff that can be boxed. Wallmart and others sell storage boxes that are translucent so you can more or less see what is inside. Since these boxes come in all kinds of sizes, there is a combination of boxes that will fit most every need.

If you get a number boxes the same size, they can be stacked for storage when empty.

As snowbirds, our biggest source of basement clutter tends to be overbuying on canned goods and paper products at Sam's Club. We like the savings from buying in bulk, but there just isn't any room for it all.
  • We carry only the bare minimum of 'stuff'. We pack so that the first thing we need, will be the closest to the door. If you have too much 'stuff', to reach your other 'stuff'-better get rid of some of your 'stuff'!
