Pacific Coast - planning snafu

Hello Again!
Yes, I am very grateful to have a job where I can travel and get paid. That said, sometimes a scheduling snafu throws a wrench into things.

On 7/7 we will check into Coyote Valley in Morgan Hill, CA. We will be there for a week visiting family while I am in an office for a few days in Pleasanton, CA, checking out 7/14 at the earliest.

After that, my next commitment is 8/1 in Putin Bay, OH. My mistake, I thought this event was about two weeks later, so wasn't expecting the time compression.

So, there are three options as we see them...
1) take two weeks to cruise up the Pacific Coast form SFO headed north, then high tail it home to Dallas so I can jump on a plane
2) make the cross-country run and find something to do in the Central / NE for a bit
3) head back to Dallas immediately after 7/14, fly to Putin Bay and back, then find somewhere else to go when I return.

Clearly no one can really answer the "what should we do" question, but you guys could likely weigh in with travel experiences, things to see and do (option 1 or 2), etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Go to the Amish country of Ohio. Home to the largest Amish population in the United States

    Beautiful area.
Need suggestions on what to do PM me
  • Last year around this time, we were on the road in SD. DW needed to be in the SF Bay area for a couple of days for family stuff, so we headed for the original KOA in Billings, MT, and she flew out to SFO, while I stayed with the TT and the dogs. Could you plan to head up the coast and be near, say, Seattle/Tacoma when the time comes? Then you could fly out to Cleveland and resume your trip after your business is complete in Put-in-Bay. Just a thought. I'd hate to see you cut your travels short. There is so much to see in the good ol' USA.
  • If I were you I would stay far away from Seattle, bumper to bumper traffic, pot heads, pan handlers and rude people, prices are high as well ...

Sea-Tec airport is a night mare and if you have a bigger pickup you may not be able to park at the airport only in a off site parking lot unless you have someone to drop you off... Better to stay to the south around Portland Or and fly out of their air-port, far, far easier to get in an out of an park.

I will say Portland isn't a peace of cake either but it's somewhat better than Seattle and the people are not as rude. Like Seattle, Portland has lots of bikes an bikers who think they own the sidewalk and road ...

I will say that Washington an Oregon are very pretty states and have lots to do with some beautiful camp grounds thought out both states, it just the large cities that really S%$&^K... How do I know, I have lived here for close to 30 years ...

The other day we went to see our kids in Kent Washington, from were we live its close to 90 miles north I-5 and north east Wa512 TO WA167 to east RT18, 4 hours later we arrived and this on a week day after 10 in the morning, the weekends are even worse ...You really have to laugh, on the weekends I-5 is packed between Seattle and Portland on Friday from all the people from Seattle going to Portland and all the Portland people coming north to Seattle, it like they exchange cities on the weekends. then on Sunday it's packed again with all the people returning back home from either city LOL

I personnel would like being in Ohio at Puttin-Bay, lots of cool things to do, nice folks an as someone said going south just a little bit you have the Amish country which is really cool. You are right on lake Erie which has some of the best fishing in the country, also the big amusement park (Ceder Park) which is really cool if your into to such things ...

    Safe travels

    Wow, cranky much?

Yes, the northwest cities are full of people who take personal responsibility for the environment by biking to work. And yes, they do own the roads just as much as people in cars do. Lord knows they pay enough in property taxes.

I think the idea of flying out to your job and back is a good one!

I would take weather into account. Are Dallas and OH horrible in July? The PNW is usually gorgeous then.
  • FWIW, Why not tour the sights in between OR and OH? Black Hills, Bad lands, Rocky's, Cabela's, Moline IL (home of John Deere).

If it were me I'd just do some sight seeing along the way instead of scurrying back and forth to catch flights. We just took a 2 week trip through Grand Teton NP, Yellowstone NP, Cody WY, and Mt. Rushmore and saw some amazing sights. Maybe you could hit some of those along the way?

Also, Reno NV and lake Tahoe is a really neat area. You could pop up I-80 and spend a few days there then on to Salt Lake City, north to Teton or Yellowstone then east on I-90. After Mt. Rushmore a couple of solid driving days and you'd be in northern OH for your destination at Putin Bay.

Wow, cranky much? Of course they pay (more) than enough in property/business/sales taxes. Look who runs the government.

The people do. Citizens have a much stronger voice in the PNW than in most states. And they keep voting to raise their own taxes, because they like the services. They like having the beautiful coastline, and the numerous huge and small parks, and the art and culture -- all the stuff that bring hordes of rvers to visit every year!
