Pullrite superglide 16k is going in tomorrow

We signed the papers for a gently used 2009 cougar 278rks on Sunday.Although the seller included a husky 16k manual slide I decided to spend the $$$ for the superglide.I read quite a bit about how they are the best and even though my 5'er is only 7,000 lbs empty I wanted the piece of mind. The seller was nice enough to let me keep it at his place until this weekend when I can take possetion if it.

  • I had the 16K superglide for a few years. It was a worry/trouble free hitch. High quality.
  • ditto miles... just like with anything there are keys to success !

once I discovered these few points:
    1) raise until there is a bit of a gap between capture plate and hitch head
(but not so much as to lift the truck with the pin :) )
    2) find the center spot where there is no forward or backward pressure on the pin
    3) pull de pin !

fyi - do not use a weld on plate... will create issue if you need to leave it at the dealer and they have to move it around...

as stated in the docs be somewhat straight when hitching or unhitching - just makes it easier (iirc < 16 degrees off ?)
  • I've raised the trailer until the pin plate starts to lift off the hitch and the handle always releases fine. Also like the new Superglides as they do not need any lube other than WD-40 on the rails and pivot point on the hitch itself.

I was having problems unhitching mine sometimes. Now I have DW raising while I pull on the handle. Once the handle pulls I raise until I see the plate just come off the hitch and out I go. I haven't had a single problem since I started doing it this way.

This is the only FW hitch I have owned but I do like it. Don't forget to spray your rails.
  • I like my 18K... when un-hitching it sometimes gives me trouble pulling the handle... What I do is put my wheel chocks under the trailer wheels , place the truck in reverse (to take the tension off the jaw) , put me brake on(truck back in park).. viola - never an issue from that point...Joe
  • The Superglide is a good hitch, what adapter are you putting on the pin-box? I like the simple bolt on, that way I can remove it when I drop the rig off for service (the weld on, is well.....) Of course with the adapter no, on one could easily steal the rig.

    Some points:
*Getting the rig the right height for an easy hitch/un-hitch is critical.
*Don't use a disc between the hitch and pin-box
    *Read the manual about hitching/un-hitching

At some point you might find the hitch will simply not un-hitch. If this happens, lower the legs, remove the two pins that connect the hitch head to the body, raise the trailer....at some point the tension on the jaw will be removed, then pull the handle and lower the trailer to put the hitch-head back on the body.
  • You will love the Superglide.
Call it a cheap insurance policy or peace of mind. Either way, it is one less thing to worry about.
