Quality /durability of Shasta Phoenix 5ers? 34RD?

We went shopping again today, to look at some more used units. More musty or doggy smelling ones! So, we decided to look at some new ones. We saw this unit (34RD) and I fell in love with the floor plan of the kitchen/dining/living area!! Rear dining!! Very unusual!! I love to cook! There was so much room in the kitchen with the counter space and pantry!! So, that was the "wow" factor!

However, one huge concern is the smaller size of the bedroom closet! If we put a washer and dryer in the closet, that takes up both ends of the closet, leaving a tiny space for hanging clothes. We plan to live in it while we do renovations on our house, so it should be able to withstand daily use for quite some time....perhaps a year.

The other concern that I have...The shower surround sections are attached to the walls behind them with some kind of screws or rivets all along the interior of the shower surround. I am wondering if the holes that have been created by the rivets would allow water intrusion to the walls behind the shower surround...any experience or thoughts on this type of construction? I know that this brand is not high-end, so there are some cheap-outs on these units, but the weight and the length, as well as the price fits our parameters, so we are interested in the unit.

Does anyone own one of these? Or any other Shasta Phoenix? Would love to hear about the quality /durability/ insulation factor of these units, etc.

We did not see any stickers that said that it was a 4 season camper. Don't know if these come with a four season package.... Please share any problems you have had with the make and the manufacturer!

Thanks for your help in advance!!

  • I looked at one last week, and it was ok, but the upholstery on the furniture looked like entry level.
  • I can be of no help to you. However, we also recently looked at a couple of them (don't remember the model number though, it was rear living ) and really liked them also. I have not been able to find much information on them either. I wish you luck!
  • Google says it is a Forest River product out of Elkhart, but I don't recall ever having seen one in the real world.

Somebody out there must know something about them.
  • There are very few if any trailers or 5th wheels that are 4 season. They may say so and the insulation factors might imply that but the windows and slides and leak associated with them will overpower any of the effects of the insulation. Check the insulation and seals on the slide's floors, walls and ceilings and you will find real weak spots for 4 season living. Trying to live in a RV under 35 degrees is risky at best and can be very expensive to heat.
