Roof Safety and Preventing Falls
The last couple of days, I've been cleaning and waxing the FW. One of the jobs is to clean and coat the rubber roof. Since the roof on a fiver is about 10-12 feet to the ground, a fall could be catastrophic. I was very careful, and got the job done, but it made me wonder what you all do for safety measures while on the roof. Most of my career was in an industrial environment. Slips, trips and falls were the number one cause of injuries every year. Even falling at ground level can cause significant injury. Falling from 10 feet can be fatal or cause serious permanent injury.
When I went to my manufacturer's factory, all the employees working on the roof had on a safety harness which was attached to the ceiling overhead. Unless you have inside storage, this is impossible.
Here were some self imposed rules that I followed while on the roof.
1 - Never step backwards.
2 - Always watch where you're putting your feet.
3 - Never work on the roof while alone. Have someone on the ground that can get aid if the worst case scenario occurred.
4 - Never lay rags, brushes or other tools where they can be tripped over.
5 - Do not step closer to the edge than 18".
6 - when possible, sit or kneel while working.
7 - Use a pole or walking stick to provide a supplemental balance point to your legs.
Do any of you have additional safety precautions you take when on the roof of your RV?
