Slide Rot! Help

Hi everyone,

I would like to know if anyone has experienced this issue and how I may be able to deal with it.

My trailer (see signature) has three slides. The front slide (bedroom) as soft plywood under it on the outside. This one looks like it has a tarp-like material protecting it from the environment.

I noticed that this material looks like it is starting to wear so I started poking around the area and was unplesently supprised. The two areas where the rollers are is extremely soft.

Has anyone dealt with this before, and more importantly, how can I make it so that the roller does not destroy the wood making the slide useless.

Please advise, and thanks for the help.

  • You guys are all correct. I can see the metal trim at the bottom of the slide. The ends of the trim allowed water to penetrate the plastic covering that is supposed to keep the water away from the wood. I looks like I have a project ahead of me.

My other slides have a different type of covering on the wood. Almost like a paint or something. It is smooth black plastic or something.

    My questions are:

    1. Can I use the material found on my other slides on the repair slide? What is it?

    2. Do I have to remove the wood or can I put a 1/8" thick metal plate under the entire slide and seal off the edge to prevent further damage. I saw a video online about installing "drip edges" on the slides. I will be doing that.

The problem areas are centered around where the 2 slide rollers are. I dont think I have to replace the wood. Maybe put something around where the rollers go to help distribute the weight.

    Thoughts or ideas?

Any chance you would be willing to email pics of your repair? The link requires that I set up an account.

Thanks and I appreciate the help.
  • I think the problem is the metal brace on the outside is often not caulked so water gets under it and the fabric and rots the floor. As said floor must be replaced and sides properly sealed.

had to find the leak, repair it, replace half the floor, and most of the wall board. As long as I was going that far, I paneled the closet with cedar planks...

  • Been there, I had to remove and rebuild the slide floor.
Stop the leak and dry it out is the only chance you have to save it.
