Swinging Door will not stay open

My FW has a swinging door for the bath room and a swinging door for the bedroom. I am unable to level the FW so both doors will stay open. A little out of level on way and one door stays open and the other swing close. Out of level the other way and the other door swings close.

In my S&D home I would remove the pin on the door hinge and bend it a little to create some friction. A quick look at the FW hinge looks like the pin is not removable.

Any suggestion on how to add a little friction to the hinge so the doors will stay open? .... . . . :h

Don't know about you, buy my DW hates having bathroom doors open so that wouldn't be an issue for us. :B Alternative would be to put a door stop on one of the doors but replace the pad with a magnet, then glue a small metal plate on the wall; just enough "stick" to keep the door from swinging shut.

  • Although I do not have your specific issue, I had a problem with my rig's main door. It was held open by the plastic "T" like in many rigs, which I really do not care for. To fix it I went to Lowe's and purchased a $4 magnetic door stop so now when I fully open the main door, the magnet holds it open.

Something like this might work in your case and the good part is that it also prevents door damage to the wall and other parts.
  • Shim one end of the hinge to mis-align the hinges. That will create some friction.
  • Use command hooks and hair ties. Put a small command hook on the door and close it till it contacts the wall. Put a command hook on the wall the same level as the one on the door. Use a hair bungee tie (ask your wife) or rubber band between the two hooks.

On edit - just saw the magnet idea above - that would work better.
  • or maybe two strips of velcro will work; one vertical and the other horizontal so that the glued surfaces are stronger than the two strips stuck to each other.
  • We just use a rubber door wedge. Use my foot to slide it out or back in when needed.
  • level and plumb is the key to a great job hanging a door. An rv would be harder to achieve this. I would if it was my problem do this. Get the floor as level as possible front to back and left to right and use a good long level to see if the problem shows up. Maybe others would use another method but this would tell me if I could make the issue better. The jamb would be a problem and maybe not worth the effort. chevman
