I know, I know ... not another tire question thread. Sorry, but there's so much out there that I get lost (and disheartened) before I can read it all.Simple question really. Have an appointment with my local dealer (original owner bought it there in 2012, sold it to us in 2014) a month from now for tire replacement / brake inspection / bearing pack / state inspection (which it failed last fall because of the tires).We're only part timers averaging less than 2,500 miles / season but I don't want to replace old Chinese bombs with new ones. I want to know if moving up to E rated ST tires is OK if I go with the better brands (Maxxis) or if I should just move up to LT's instead.I wanted to buy them from Tirerack.com but the only STs they have are the usual Marathon / Towmax garbage which is why I'm considering going the LT route. They have a lot better options for 6" rims like the BFG Long Trail T/A Tour and the Firestone Destination A/T. Both of those have ribs rather than belts, which I've learned is desired for trailer service (see, I did read some of the other forum threads). :)My question is that both of those LTs have a Load Index of 1874# per tire or 3744 / axle (700# less than my GAWR). I know hitch weight gets factored into the calculation, but I've no idea what mine is and no way to figure it out before I order the tires.So am I good with either of those LTs so I can ditch the ST tires? I'll spend some more time reading the various threads, but all advice is welcome. Thanks in advance!

Your local RV dealer mounts tires that you bring in? Some tire shops will not install LTs on a trailer.

You've been scared by all the ST trash talk around here.You don't need to got with LT tires on that trailer. Your existing tire size has plenty of excess capacity, and thus the ST tires will work fine.Your wheels are probably the same as on my Cougar, and they are rated for 80psi. I would also just run E rated Maxxis tires. Maybe some of the Carlisle Radial Trail RH tires. Pay attention to your tires regardless of brand and they will serve you well. +1 for E rated MAXXIS for your trailer. Verify your wheels are rated 80 psi or 2830 pounds.

If you go LT you still need the proper rating and I always recommend you cover the full GVWR in the tire rating.
Really need LT225/75R16-E for LT tires. 2680 pound rating.

Maybe... On my Used Travel Trailer it had Goodyear Marathon tires that were only 15 years old when I replaced them with Maxxis. :E

#1) There are very few 15 inch LT tires available, so that is probably not a great option.

#2) Unless your weight is exceeding the current tire capacity, why change to E rated ST's? My point is that running a higher PSI rated tire at that higher number when you don't need the extra load capacity results in a tire that is too stiff and MAY beat the trailer and trailer suspension to death. Basically you are running an over-inflated tire. You can run an E rated tire at a lower PSI, but at say 65 PSI, it has the exact same load capacity as a D rated tire at the same PSI. But with more rubber, it will actually run hotter than the D tire.

So, my recommendation is get the best D rated ST tire you can unless your weight is very close to the max capacity. In that case you can run an E rated tire but just don't run it at 80 psi.

My 5er weighs the same as yours, and I just ordered Kenda 10 ply load range E from Tires and Wheels. I don't think Maxxis are worth $30 more a tire for the same thing.
