From Sticks and Bricks to Full Time RV - order of process?

53 yo widow(5 yrs) and I'm going to follow our dream of full time RV'ing on my own. I'm having difficulty getting the order of the process and would appreciate experienced input.

I have a home to sell, and RV to buy, an estate sale to rid myself of what the kids don't want, etc. Would prefer to purchase RV after sale of home. Would like to leave enough furnishings for home to be "staged" as they are said to sell faster. It's common here to close on the home and turn over the keys the same day.

In what order did you do everything?

  • The very first thing you do is call the kids and tell them to come get anything that was once theirs. Otherwise it is going in the dumpster or the estate auction. That is what my parents did to me. It was painful, but I found some things from my childhood that I treasure today. Then you ask if there is anything else of yours they want. I got some of the grandparents' stuff that I remembered from my childhood.
  • Thanks so much for your prompt and helpful responses! I've been researching RV's for about a year and am pretty set on a class C between 22'-26'. I hope to find one 3-5 years old, but won't be in a rush to buy as I'm fortunate to have family in the area I can stay with until finding the right one for the right price.

In my area, checks are exchanged at closing so there is no danger of a loan falling through, etc. All of that is confirmed before the closing date.

I have limited experience full timing. I live in the deep south, camped my way north, then west, then south again. Came home, bought a shuttle bus and fixed it up for camping, then took off across the gulf and up the east coast. I'd love to do that again but S L O W L Y so I have time to smell the roses and get to know each area better.

Thanks again for your responses and I look forward to more :-)
  • I would never turn over my house on day of closing...Often you hear of something going wrong at closing ( such as a change in the buyer's credit score, thus loan not approved). At least 24 hours after closing. IMO
  • Congrats to you on your decision to follow the dream you and your husband had.

We had already purchased our fifth-wheel. Put S&B up for sale, got contract on house, sold house almost immediately, closed about 6 weeks later. In the meantime, gave kids their first choice on "stuff", had 2 big yard sales. Then moved into RV, finished cleaning out S&B, closed on it... and haven't looked back. That was back in 2004. Yes, we closed and turned over keys in same day, too.

    Good Luck and God Bless.
  • We prepared the house for sale and got rid of some of our furniture so the house did not look so full. Once the house had a contract on it we went to work getting rid of everything. We sold and gave away a lot and the few things we kept we moved into a storage unit. We only kept a few things til the last minute such as a bed and one TV etc. We wrote in the contract that possession is 3 days after escrow closes, so that's how long we had to get rid of the final things.

We already had an RV, but I would advise you to do all your research before you buy something. Once you have sold the house the worst case would be to rent a small furnished apartment for a little while. Don't rush your purchase.

    Hope this helps.
