Something we didn't plan for

So far our full-timing adventure has gone well.

But on Monday, June 20, we were notified by other drivers on the interstate of a problem.

Not seeing any smoke or anything dragging, I slowed down, got on the shoulder and drove slowly to the next exit, got off the freeway and into a large parking log.

There I discovered the driver's side front wheel of the TT had a hub/ bearing failure.

Surprisingly we were just five miles away from where we bought the rig when we had the problem. Discovered bigger problems.

Short story is that both axles need to be replaced. Good story is that extended warranty covers all but $75 deductible and express shipping for the axles.

Bad story is that now 22 days after the incident, we are still waiting on Dexter to drop ship the axles to the dealer. We hope that will be this week, or next week.

Dealer has a 'you bought it here - go to the front of the line' repair policy, so we should be back on the road within a week of getting the axles in to the dealer.

We planned for a lot of things. We didn't plan for up to 40 days out of the rig. (We also lucked out on the truck. Hail damage from the March 23 storms in Wylie, TX badly damaged the truck. Repair will take about three weeks, so we are actually without the truck. Driving a very small rental while the truck is in the shop.)

Lucky for us, my daughter and son live in the Dallas area, so we have a place to stay.

But it ain't our rig, we don't have all our stuff/ clothes/ etc.

Love the grandkids, but after over three straight weeks, getting a little tired and want some peace and quiet.

Wow, I am glad you got things worked out, and that you handled everything so well!
  • The axles arrived from Dexter yesterday mid-day - July 20. They were installed, the rig road tested - and we picked up the TT at 2 pm today July 21.

I got a closeup look at the old axles. My father was a welder - he would have tanned my rearend if I ever did welds as sloppy as the ones on the original axles. One weld on both the front and rear axles was simply a very poor job. Likely was never actually attached. That allowed the axle to work against the other welds til they all broke on one side of the front axle.

Thanks to ExploreUSA in Mesquite (Dallas) for getting the job done right.
  • The shop doesn't allow people to stay in rigs on-site. They say it is an insurance issue.

We could have had it towed to an RV park after the shop determined the needed repairs - stay in the rig - then have it towed back for the actual work (both tows on a lowboy flatbed at our expense). The closest RV park/ trailer park is about 18 miles from the shop. But to go to one which will allow us to stay without a planned departure date - 58 miles one way. Those which allow full-timers closer have all their monthly spots booked. The closet park does not allow long-term stays. They don't want to become a full-timer permanent residence CG.

Yes, I checked with Dexter, and their information matches what the shop told me exactly.
  • If the rig is up on blocks in the middle of the shop it can not be moved is my theory of why they are not staying in it. I suspect the shop's insurance company would not cover any accidents in this situation if someone would decide to live in a broke down MH in the middle of the shop.
  • Why are you not staying in your rig? They aren't doing anything with it? We always stay in our mh. Tell the repair shop we are and they give us power. We fill our water tanks and dump if we have to.
  • You better start calling Dexter yourself and ask for customer relations or someone. To verify Dexter is the hold up and not your Rv repair shop
  • I do feel the pain, luckily things will be better soon!

  • We repack yearly. The grease in the outer bearing was still good, though the bearing had fallen apart. The inner bearing was welded to the axle and the grease has burned up during that event. It was weird.

Repair shop found that a weld near the hub had cracked and allowed the wheel to track about 10 degrees off alignment. Found smaller cracks on welds on both sides of both axles.
  • Although a lot of bad luck you were lucky to be near repair location and relatives. A good story of what can happen and why it is almost impossible to prepare... although this reinforces my thoughts on yearly repacking wheel bearings. You seem to be taking everything in stride but trust me your daughter is probably just as anxious to see your tail lights heading down the road. Hope you do have a peaceful remainder of the summer without any catastrophe's.
