Good Sam Insurance - Good or Not?

I am currently w/Progressive and they have been very good. I've had one claim w/my old coach and it was seamless. Also, have them for my cars.

However, they seem real expensive. Good Sam sent me a pitch letter that looks good.

I am not a full timer and don't have the time or patience for drawn out claim processes and don't want to worry about the fine print in the coverage.

Any insights and/or experience is greatly appreciated.

Could you be thinking National General? National Interstate got out of insuring RV's and sold their book of business to Safeco. Blue Sky went out of business. The number of carriers that have really good RV coverage's has shrunk over the last several years.

  • I have had G.S insurance for 7 years and no claims. Includes house, 2 vehicles and RV. G.S., as said, is not an insurance company but subs to other insurance companies and most are with National Interstate. Home owners through G. S. is Monument Valley Indemnity.
I am currently shopping insurance and they are cheaper than A.A.R.P. and Hartford. I had Hartford for several years at a previous home and vehicles with one claim for hurricane damage and roof replacement. They were quick to send an adjuster and approve and pay the claim.

During my research I found that several companies depreciate the roof based on age and quoted me a cash value rather than replacement cost. Allstate was one so be careful on what you are quoted.

National Interstate has been consistently less money and good coverage but, I am ashamed to admit this, I did not do due diligence when buying from them. They have always provided coverage limits, I.E., deductible, limits on liability, comprehension etc. BUT they never broke it down by vehicle. When I asked specifically what I was paying for my RV they said $413.00 per 6 months. That is totally unacceptable. It made the overall premium vs. most all other insurances less but I will be checking vehicle coverage premiums with or without RV.

Edited. If you are buying a home owners I found that Hartford quotes a wind storm with 5% deductible. That can add up to quite a bit of out of pocket. I did not check on a 1 or 2% deductible. As rexlion said- Read the fine print.
  • Pitch letters always look good. Get an actual quote. If you like the numbers, ask for a copy of a policy agreement and read it... fine print and all.
  • tutu10- Good Sam Insurance Agency is an independent agency that can shop with Safeco, National General, Progressive and Foremost. All four companies have great RV coverage's. We will shop across these companies to get you the best rate but also the coverage's you need. Rate is going to depend on where you live, driving record, what you own for vehicles and credit. We do the shopping for you.

    Well........................Good Luck with that!

Only you can answer your own question. Progressive may get you your best bang for the buck in location A, but be the most overpriced available in location B. Don't ask on RV boards, shop the numbers comparing apples to apples. Many variables go into insurance rates, not the least of which are location, claim rates, and credit ratings, so asking on these boards is nothing but a total waste of time and effort.

Since Good Sam is not an insurance company they're probably not going to be the cheapest regardless, which seems to be your main criteria, because they are nothing more than a middle man taking a cut of your money.
  • I've found the best price through AARP/Hartford. Had Farmers before who used Foremost for RV claims. Had one broken windshield and the experience with them was good. Priced everyone when switching. Good Sam was more expensive.
