Good Sam Roadside Service is Useless

Finally needed to use the roadside service this morning and it turned out to be a futile exercise. It started out good but quickly turned into the same poor service that I have now grown to expect from anything affiliated with Camping World. After my first call at approximately 9 am, I soon received a call from a nice guy at a shop in Murphy, NC. He confirmed the details of the issue with me and said that he would arrive in about an hour. He called me back in about 20 minutes and apologized because Good Sam would not agree to pay him $100 to travel 90 miles round trip to fix my problem. Good Sam did not call me back to update any progress. I made three more calls to Good Sam before finding out that they were dispatching someone from 2 hours away and they would not arrive until 2 pm. I canceled the work, went and bought tools, and got someone locally to do it at my own expense.

I sure am glad that I did not buy the extended service from CW and rest assured that I will never pay for GS Roadside Assistance after my complimentary period expires. I am supposedly "Platinum Plus". I would hate to be gold or silver.

Another amusing thing is that when I canceled, I asked the lady who I needed to talk to in order to register a complaint. She transferred me to some customer relations number where after being on hold for several minutes I finally just hung up.

  • Funny how people jump to the anti-GSRA side when you only have part of a story.

    1) Guy calls an confirms the issue and then calls back because GSRA won't give $100 for a 90 mile trip. First of all, I would assume that the guy is contracted for tow up front and GSRA does not do repairs. Repairs are on you. Was the $100 in addition to the contracted rate or was he referring to that the entire cost for him is $100? Why didn't he know this before calling you when he received the assignment? Was he trying to make more money off of GSRA? $100 for a 90 mile round trip drive is over a buck a mile.

2)You went and bought tools, but had someone else fix it at your own expense. So this was a repair? GSRA doesn't do repairs. They will dispatch someone to do them, but you have to pay for it. And why would you buy tools if you were paying someone else to fix it? Seems like to me that the 2 hours might of been worth it.

Not enough information in this story to warrant a GSRA bashing in my opinion.
  • I think you may have appreciated the service even if an extended wait if the breakdown was not such an easy fix. These road services are for the big stuff.

I am not a member. Have been towed once in 15 years of RVing, paid cash. Short tow $80, done.

Wait, no don't be so secretive. What are you and GS going to do to correct this?
This is your chance to make a good impression and show your stuff.

  • We feel your pain. It does seem that the service (GSRA) was a bit unreasonable. They can't possibly expect a service truck to travel that kind of distance and not get paid. We have had Coach-Net for over 10 years and used them a few times in the past. Several times for older motorhomes and once for the family car. Each experience has been positive for us. For that reason we will stick with Coach-Net.

It will be interesting to see if someone from Good Sam can offer you any form of positive resolution.
  • I have defended Good Sam when people were unreasonable but in this instance I cannot find anything to defend.

SORRY they were not there for you when you needed them. That in itself warrants you cancelling them.

    Thank you for sharing
  • All in all a fabulous experience...would'nt you say?

    NOT!
  • Our GS Roadside Assist. has expired and after several stories lately about all the trouble people have went through we are going to be exploring other options. I know there are also plenty out there that have not had issues. We have been fortunate enough to have never needed to call GS for a roadside problem or anything else. But going full-time next spring we will need coverage again. So we will defiantly shopping around before we purchase another plan.
