Good Sam TravelAssist+

I bought a three year TA plan this summer just before a long trip which we completed successfully. At our ages, we could easily encounter a medical problem that would require the benefits of this plan and I am happy to see that others who have had need to use it or check out its use have been satisfied with the service they received. I was also happy to see a GS Travel Assist person offer to help the lady who had wrongfully been told she needed a 5 day hospitalizaton for RV return service. By the way, I can understand the 'up to 10 day' requirement for a driver to return an RV. Ask some of the major factories about their experience in getting their coaches delivered. They all seem to be looking for a service that provides drivers.

From my experience where I almost needed an RV return (described earlier in this thread), RV return did not require hospitalization or medical evacuation, only that a doctor write a letter on their or hospital letterhead stating for medical reasons, the driver could not drive their vehicle home.

The Travel Assist staff person gave me the specific wording required.

I did not think Travel Assist would pay for my husband or me to travel home ourselves, such as flying home, so we would have paid for that.

Based on the plan document wording, the medical evacuation portion does seem to require the need for transfer to a medical facility that can provide the necessary level of care or hospitalization for medically necessary repatriation.

There is no hospitalization requirement for the Return of RV/Vehicle benefit. We will arrange and pay for the return of your RV or vehicle if you become unable to drive it due to an unexpected illness or injury. The only requirement is that a medical professional documents that you are unable to drive due to the injury or illness. If you were told otherwise, I'd like to resolve this as soon as possible.

Then please explain this.

If I am working a temporary job in another state with an expectation of returning to my home state and I get hurt in the temporary job, I would NOT be considered "away from home?"

I have had this for two years. Two years ago (right after I signed up for it), I broke my foot and I was 1600 miles away from home. Contacted Good Sam (to see if I could get a driver for my RV), and found out I had to have been hospitalized for a week before I would get someone to drive the RV back.

It was hell having to set up and take down on crutches during the 1600 mile trip back home.

Away from home is defined as on a vacation or business trip away from your permanent primary residence (defined by the locale of the address as shown on your state driver's license or state-issued identification card), without minumum or maximum duration or mileage restriction, for a purpose other than your normal daily activities or routine.

My two biggest questions are - as fulltime RV'ers ... when we go on a trip are we considered on "Vacation" ? So therefore if we have a permanent address plus a mailing address, then home would be to the "Permanent Address on our Diver's License", correct ?

For as far as I got, I was satisfied with the people I talked to and the service.

My contact person sent the form quickly and was very clear on what the doctor's note needed to say

When I called back for clarification, the person answering tried to connect me to the same person who was my initial contact. As I only needed some clarification, this was not necessary and the person answered my questions just fine. But having this primary contact point would have been very beneficial if I had ended up needing the service.

I think it is understandable that pickup would not be immediate, and they did say "up to 10 days" as the maximum. It was going to take me a day or so to get the doctor's letter and forms done.

In a different campground with more flexibility, this would not have been as much an issue. And I'm sure I could have found other motorhome owners there who would have helped.

The biggest issue I had is that it was so hard to find out and understand what coverage is included in medical assist insurance policies. Most only cover assistance after hospitalization and you need special assistance getting home. There are a few very expensive ones that will fly you home to be treated, but most expect you to be treated at the nearest hospital.

Again, I did not have an issue with GS Travel Assist, and I felt better once I had contacted them and started to see I had help.

I just wanted to share what I learned since I too was unable to find any one with personal experience, and to share some things that you need to consider when using it.
