Good Sams Road Service

On my way back from TN going through Alabama south of Troy. My belt broke. I called Good Sam and they sent a repair man from Montgomery which was 50 miles north of where I was. I told the Good Sams person to have them bring a belt and told them all the information they needed to know to get the correct belt. When they arrived 1 1/2 hour later they had no belt.
they were three people in a truck pulling a large trailer which said Mc Coy Mobil RV Repair. Said they had no belt and would have to go back to Troy 30 miles north of where we were. I told them I had a belt which I bought for spare when I first got the motor home. They crawled under the rig and after about one hour got the belt installed. I asked what my charges was and they said $438.00. I almost fell over. Since I had no choice in the matter I wrote them a check and went on my way. My question to myself is why did I call Good Sams Road Service. I could have found a RV repair shop myself in the town I was near. I looked it up on the computer and they was one with in 10 miles. So in this case I felt Good Sam was not very helpful. Thinking strong about another road service. I ordered another belt, won't travel without a spare.

  • Yes they knew they had me by the ears. A 80 year old man in trouble miles from home and they knew I would pay just to get on the road. I just hope they can live with themselves. I was a mechanic all my working years but at 80 I am just not able to do it any more. If It had happened closer to home I would have tried to repair myself but with bad back and lung problems I just felt I should get on my way, so I paid.

Problem is these guys know YOU NEED the belt put on, they charge what they want, because YOU NEED their help. Like a previous poster said. I will always look for my own shop, and ask a price before they come out

Or ask the hourly rate before they start and keep track of the time
  • If you sign a contract with a roadside emergency service provided by anyone it is incumbent on you to read and understand the contract terms, conditions and limitations.

You had a choice but did not take it. REFUSE TO PAY! Make a scene. GSRA dispatched an INDEPENDENT SERVICE CONTRACTOR to your location. Any other roadside service may have dispatched the same people. GSRA pays them for travel time only, you are responsible for labor. Max $200 would be reasonable. Stop payment on our check AND READ THE GOOD SAM BROCHURE so you know your coverage
  • You (I) have Good Sam for roadside towing...and I truly hope that we never have to use the towing service. Beyond that, AAA, CoachNet, GoodSam (note alphabetical order) only send you a licensed (not necessarily qualified)service technician/mechanic. The charges are on you. When I had CoachNet they sent out a tech and told me the charge would be $50, the tech, who did a wonderful job by the way, said he never agreed to that, he usually gets $75/hr. He was great, got us back on the road and I gladly paid his rate and gave him lunch.
My point, if I need service I will find an appropriate truck/RV service center and hobble there, or call Good Sam and be towed to the service center. Unless I am sent a Truck/RV specialist I'll find my own service.
