Is Good Sam worth joining?

All I see are issues with GS and their merchandise certificates and ordering things and threads closed due to inactivity
Been to a couple campgrounds where they ask if we're members for a discount and even ordering things at Overtons for a discount
$29 doesn't seem like a big deal for what they offer
Anyone have something Good to say? :)

Like most memberships. Depends on the use. You get a discount at Camping world.. Now some years I buy enough at CW to justify. You get a discount at some campgrounds Not a benefit for me in general. But can be.

You get other benefits as well.. check 'em out add 'em up and decide.

    Plus the gas discounts
I just see a lot of issues with their road side assistance
I don't use my GS lifetime membership. I do purchase GS platinum road side assistance every year, greatful I haven't had to use it. Never been to a GS rally.

If discount camping is what your after Passport America would probably be a better option.

I did purchase their emergency medical transport service as well. After I found out a helicopter medical evacuation cost around 30k. I will be extremely grateful if this is never needed.
  • I joined GS because I wanted peace of mind during my solo cross-country trips.
Even a single flat tire would become a major headache with no "back-up".

I've broken down (failed ECU) on an interstate towing a camper, luckily I
had road-side assistance. Without it it would have been a major PITA and
    cost a bundle.

I've also had a flat on my TV - 1 call and 1 hour later, I was on my way.

And those "issues" you hear about........ People prefer to complain than offer
praise when things go well. I bet there are thousands of
    positive stories that go undocumented.

At the end of the day its really an insurance policy - you have to decide its
value. Personally, it's a small price to pay for that peace of mind.
  • I joined GS because it was required before we could join a local camping club. We use Passport America's 50% discount as we travel for one night stays along the way. We also joined FMCA because of their many benefits for members. We occasionally visit Camping World stores when convenient and receive a 10% discount on merchandise because of our GS membership but it's not worth going out of our way.

FMCA is the only large nonprofit RV club operated for the benefit of its membership. The repatriation insurance included with membership is worth more than the yearly dues of $50 but we also enjoy many of the other benefits available to members.

I notified GS to keep my name off their barrage of advertising mail that only ends up in my trashcan anyway.

Our camping club is like an extended family to us and a reason to use our MH on a regular basis.
  • We are members of and former officers of a local Good Sam chapter. We've made many friends by participating in state Good Sam rallies and local chapter campouts.

I may or may not have joined for the discounts. I have used the RV park discount on a few occasions but I don't normally shop at Camping World.

And if those limits fit your desired usage, you answered your own question.
If campground discounts are more important to you, then Passports and Escapees could make more sense.
  • I get the membership fee back in discounts. Gravy after that.

  • Some campgrounds will give a 10% discount (on the daily rate) for Good Sam Members. Most of these same campgrounds also offer the same 10% discount for FMCA, AARP, Military, etc., some even for a library card! But some do not so it's up to you whether it is worth it.
