People with good Sam roadside assistance

I am looking for input from people with good Sam roadside assistance. I will keep this brief and only cover the relevant points. I broke down this weekend and was lucky enough to make it to a camp ground. I called good Sam and they dispatched a mobile mechanic, Mechanic arrived and determined he could not fix my coach and it needed to be towed (same company tows) to his companies shop. Who do you expect to pay for the tow? Again I'm only looking for those of you with good Sam roadside assistance and if you were in the same situation who would you expect to pay for the tow.

  • My understanding would be you either pay for the tow or the mechanic.
Good Sam would pay for one or the other in my opinion.
I personally would not allow them to send out a mechanic as many events require parts that the truck cannot stock all the parts.

    Pogoil.
  • We have had the service for maybe 12 years and have used them for maybe 5 events none needed a tow. That being said I am of the understanding to be covered it needs to go through them. They likely have people they work with everywhere that do it for a contract (lower) rate.

Change campground to rest area and you have just described my breakdown. GSRSA dispatched a mobile mechanic, I did not request one, when he found he could not fix it there GSRSA dispatched a tow truck and took us to the mobile mechanic's shop. What graveled me was that the mobile mechanic is only paid one way by GSRSA so I had to fork out almost $200 for his return trip to the shop, the tow itself cost me nothing.
  • We've used GSRA twice. Both times we had prompt, courteous, professional service. The one time we had to be towed, GSRA covered the towing cost and took us to an outstanding mechanic, who stayed after hours to fix our coach. Like mmccray100, we were allowed to stay in our coach on the mechanic's lot, and they even gave us a key to the lock on the gate for the lot so we could come and go as we pleased. I'm a fan of GSRA.
  • under those specific conditions, I would expect you to be billed for the tow (or the mobile mech if they allow you to choose).

I believe the detailed terms for both Good Sam and Coachnet say that you're entitled to one covered service per event. Meaning if you first request a mobile mechanic instead of a tow, and then the mobile service can't fix it, then the towing would be on you, since you already used up your one covered service for that same event. Unless the mobile mech agrees to waive the initial response fee since they couldn't fix it.
You shouldn't agree to a mobile mechanic unless you personally speak to them first, describe the details and are confident they can fix it roadside. Otherwise go for the tow immediately.

This subject has come up before when folks who never read the terms of their policy were surprised it didn't cover anything and everything.

(I carry GS and CN both and have used both on several ocassions)

    Good Sam.
I had a similar experience and had the Jeep towed to a shop. Good Sam paid for both.
  • I have GS Roadside Assistance. I recently (June '14) broke down in Rawlins, WY. I was able to limp off I-80 and park at a nearby truck stop. GS dispatched a mechanic, who arrived within a couple of hours. He determined my Power Steering Pump was defective (it also controls Power Brakes). Of course he could not fix it on-site. Good Sam dispatched a Towing Service, but they could not get out until the next day. The cost was $550 for the tow. GS paid. No problems. I'm very happy with GS.

The mechanic was from Tom Newman Truck & RV Repair in Rawlins. I cannot say enough good things about them. I was allowed to stay in my motor home while parked on their lot and even one night inside their garage. The part had to be ordered and, of course, this was late Friday, so the part couldn't be obtained until Monday.

  • I have GSRA and would expect GSRA to pay for the tow to the nearest facility able to repair the rig not necessarily to the mechanics shop.
If you want to go to a particular place that is on your dime. The distinction is small but costly
